Our sports expert buddy Kat Bailey joins us for an episode steeped in boxing history! Homer's got a crazy idea that's somewhere in the middle where he'll be beaten up by hobos for money and then he ends up fighting for the World Heavyweight Championship! I caught War's "Why Can't We Be Friends" on the radio today and think it was a great choice for Homer. Homer's match intro song is diegetic so it should be a song he would know, and a 1975 song that repeats the song title 47 times is right up his alley.

I've been doing muay thai (thai kickboxing) for 8 years, and I here's what I've learned from personal experience: 1. Fighting in a ring in front of an audience raises your adrenaline so much, it makes you more tired than you otherwise would be. 2. No matter how hard your punches are, when you watch video footage of your fight, it will look like wimpy little baby slaps. I now totally understand why they have to add sound effects and dramatic camerawork in movies. 3. After a while, you get used to getting hit in the face repeatedly. Which is scary. I love boxing, but I can't imagine doing it for a living. No one should have to get used to getting hit in the face!

And any reference to Henry's upper-lower-middle class upbringing compared to Bob's lower-upper-working class one, or whatever :-)

I think the TS drinking game would have to include any references to Bob saying "I don't watch sports/I'm not a sports guy/etc". That's at least 2 shots per episode.

That spit bucket foley is still grossly hilarious.

Okay! Great episode and Kat was wonderful as usual. I have to toss out a few more points re the amazing Paul Winfield. First, i’m Surprised nobody mentioned he was very successful as a character actor while being a gay black man, I dunno how out he was, but it seems notable given his era. Secondly, he was the amazing narrator of the late 90s A&E true crime show City Confidential up to his death. His drawl was crazy iconic. When he passed he got replaced by Keith freaking David and it wasn’t a patch on Winfield’s work

Hey, I hate to correct Henry, but Drederick Tatum was actually heavily redesigned for this episode. If you look at his Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment or Lisa's First Word designs, he doesn't have the facial hair. It's a pretty basic fightman design and I'm guessing they majorly overhauled him to give him the stature he'd need to be a genuinely frightening force that could believably wallop Homer.

The lack of nostalgia for "No Diggity" saddens me.

I always appreciated the reference to Jack Dempsey vs. Luis Firpo painting by George Bellows during Homer's hobo boxing montage. I remember this painting being in my elementary school and being a deep cut Simpsons reference I caught at a young age. Beautiful painting recreated in the Simpsons!

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to correct Kat about something sports related. Mike Tyson didn't compete in the Olympics, He decided to turn pro at 18 instead of staying in amateur boxing until the 88 Olympics in Soul. Evander Holyfield is 4 years older and competed in the 84 Olympics and got disqualified in the semi finals under questionable circumstances.

Great episode, guys. Brought back so many memories of the era, including that boxing around this time was the first ever sport/event to be PPV here in the UK so the hype was definitely real. Also, the calling out the Don King resemblance/similarities gag is truly a one of a kind joke that I've never seen any other show or movie even attempt... (thoughts?). Keep up the great work as always. ^_^
