What A Cartoon! - One-Punch Man "The Lone Cyborg"

ONE PUNCH! What A Cartoon! takes another trip to Animeland (thanks to the generous donations of Patron David Whittington) as we explore the crossover hit, One-Punch Man! This adaptation of a manga that's an adaptation of a webcomic tells the story of Saitama, a thoroughly average man who worked out enough to become the strongest human being on earth. (Unfortunately, this also caused total hair loss.) And, given the title, he can defeat any opponent with just one punch. Though this premise may seem very limited at first glance, the amount of ways the series plays with it makes One-Punch Man one of the most hilarious--and impressively animated--shows in recent memory

hi everybody It me, the guy who listened to this podcast two months late and has essential insight: -"Saitama" as a name is significant BECAUSE Saitama the place is famously boring and dull. It's a suburb of Tokyo where lots of people live but no one wants to go there. It's so associated with being lame that the phrase "datte saitama" ("but it's saitama..." expressing disappointment) was shortened and morphed into an adjective "dasai" which means lame, unfashionable, and boring. -the naming of places as a single letter is a common trope in manga and anime, typically for stories that are set in Japan but it doesn't matter WHERE in Japan. One of the more famous examples is coming up on the next What A Cartoon episode: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4 (and Part 8) takes place in "M-prefecture S-city" a clear nod to Araki's hometown of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. So One Punch Man doing it is both nodding to the trope while also making it easier to rattle off lots of generic place names in a hurry.
