The X-Files was filmed here and it was the pride of Vancouver. Pretty much every local acting veteran has been on the show. My pal and Simpsons comics writer Ian is friends with one of the Lone Gunmen. The whole city hated Duchovny for years when he took the show to L.A.

If I remember right, when the Blue M&M was finally introduced, he was the "cool" M&M. The Red and Yellow had sort of a "George and Lennie" situation going, with Red being smarter and snarky, and Yellow being a bit dumb and naive. Then Blue came out, and he was the "cool" M&M, I believe the ads had him playing the saxophone while looking like The Blues Brothers, or something. Then they started putting the Green M&M in the ads, and I guess everyone just wanted to fuck her, people included. Everybody was thirsty for the candy lady. I think the Brown one was used in ads next, and it was another lady, but I think the implication was that she was a Black Lady M&M, if that makes any sense. Then came Orange (or maybe Orange was before Brown?), who was a Crispy (later Pretzel...then I think back to Crispy?) M&M who was rightfully very apprehensive about being an M&M where people wanted to constantly eat him. And as many people know, the original voice for Yellow was J.K. Simmons...and Billy West I believe still does the voice of Red...and lately, I've heard David Cross do the voice of a piece of caramel. This has been Talking Candy. Tune in next week when I discuss the history of Brach's Rocks...the rock you can eat.

Great episode. My line of the episode would be "It's bringing love don't let it get away!" "Break its legs!". The instant, violent reaction is totally in keeping with the people of Springfield. The discussion about Urkel made me think of this fantastic Key and Peele bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Zdp1RfoyI&t=3s

I actually listen to the podcast “Citation Needed” (no ‘s’). It’s a comedy take on random subjects where they read one Wikipedia article and assume that makes them experts “because this is the Internet and that’s how it works now.” So, I recommend checking out both of those podcasts!

I absolutely love that you can hear Duchovny's grin while reading his Mulder and Scully, FBI line to Moe.

I'm not sure about that, Silicon is generally seen as the best plausible substitute to Carbon for basing life off of, it can form similarly complex molecules. The idea of silicon based life has been floated for a long time as a possible thing that could exist. Hibbert bringing it up suggests he's very well read in alternative biochemistry!

The second is the better line, but "I love amateur video" works better.

Or maybe a line about taping from "Homer Badman"... Willy saying "I love amateur video" or Marge's "as long as everybody is videotaping everyone else, justice will be done!"

lightningkraken

That could be the joke or it could be a reference to that episode of Star Trek (“Devil in the Dark”) where Kirk & Spock meet a silicon-based lifeform. Spock uses a mind-meld to communicate with it, leading to a lot of good Leonard Nimoy shouting in agony “PAIN!!”

Diamond Feit

That could work.

JR Ralls

"Check it out, Lis. You can actually pinpoint the SECOND his heart rips in half. Aaaand... now."

OK, does anyone have ANY ideas for what sound clip could be used for any time Henry starts talking bout "Tales From the Tapping!" ?

JR Ralls

It was many many years before it hit me that the joke about Hibbert asking if the alien is "carbon-based or silicon-based" is actually him asking if it's a real creature (a carbon-based lifeform) or a dude in a costume (i.e., a silicon mask). Also I gotta say, I fucking love In Search Of. I'd consider myself paranormally agnostic I guess (I just like entertaining the idea), but the shit they say on that show is wild even for ME. And some of the funniest reenactments I've ever seen. On the episode about the Oak Island Money Pit they manage to make the tragedy of three dudes falling to their death a slapstick scene. It's all on YouTube if anyone wants to watch it because there's definitely no one who cares about protecting that copyright.

M&M's are made in my hometown in New Jersey, and I can confirm there is a giant sexy green M&M in the entrance of their building :)

First of all, I just wanted to say how much I have been enjoying the podcast. It was a recommendation from Radio Free Skaro (a Doctor Who podcast) that lead me to discovering Talking Simpsons. I started listening back in February and I am now finally caught up to date! I always felt that Seasons 3-8 were the real golden age of The Simpsons, but thanks to you I have a new appreciation for Season 2 (watching Lisa's Substitute in my 20s is now a very different experience!) What I enjoy most about the podcast is learning about references that went over my head and how much showrunners can influence the show. Let's just say I now notice Jean/Reiss' flaws and Oakley/Weinstein's strengths when it comes the joke and story structure of the show. Whilst I'm not looking forward to watching the later seasons again, I am looking forward to your reviews, which may put them into a different context for me. I've also been enjoying What a Cartoon as well as I have been watching a lot of these shows and their episodes for the first time. I don't generally watch Anime, but I've enjoyed most of the shows you have covered so far. Keep up the good work guys and looking forward to hearing more podcasts to come!

I always assumed the picture of Mulder in the Speedo was a joke at Duchovny's expense. He was the narrator/host of Red Shoe Diaries, the softcore series on Showtime and he had a reputation as being a bit of a pervert. I know he eventually did seek treatment for sex addiction, but I don't think I'm projecting that onto the past because for some reason my friends and I held this opinion of him even back then.

I've known that Oliver song since I was a kid. Grew up with oldies radio.

So this is the episode I've been waiting for since Talking Simpsons began. It is my all time favorite episode for multiple personal reasons. This was the first episode of the entire series that I remember seeing. I'll never forget being 6 years old and squeezing in between my dad and the cushion of our ratty old Lazyboy recliner to be introduced to this amazing show simply because he watched it and knew this episode was about aliens and my mid 90s kid brain loved aliens. It also resonates with me for my love of Friday nights. That was always the night where I could have my friends sleep over and my parents would get us "delicious" Domino's pizza and cheesy bread. They were the simplest times that pop up in my head any time I see this episode.
