What A Cartoon! - The October Schedule

October is just around the corner, and fortunately for you the only thing scary about this month is just how many great podcasts we have in store for you! (Unless you're afraid of Garfield for some reason.) Our What A Cartoon! schedule for October runs the gamut from fighting anime to Disney fare to treasured '80s classics to weirdo MTV stuff, and we can't wait for you to hear it! And just remember, you can listen to all of these episodes a week ahead of time and ad-free by becoming a $5 patron. (And get a TON of bonus episodes on top of that!)

Here's what's coming to What A Cartoon! in October:

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part IV (Diamond is Unbreakable) - Episodes 1 & 2 [Patreon Date: 10/8/18 - Free Feed Date 10/15/18]

We're back to anime land with an adaptation of a long-running manga series that only received the TV treatment this decade. Even though we're starting with Part IV of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, it's the perfect jumping-on point for new viewers—especially viewers who love colorful (figuratively and literally) characters getting into over-the-top fights with extremely creative resolutions. And since it's streamable on VRV, why not sign up for a free 30-day trial via your friends at the Talking Simpsons network?

House of Mouse - Jiminy Cricket [Patreon Date: 10/15/18 - Free Feed Date 10/22/18]

Thanks to a Patreon request, we're digging into Disney's House of Mouse: their first HD television series, and one featuring dozens and dozens of classic characters. Being '90s kids, this show is basically a mystery to us, but we can't wait to see what we missed! Sadly, Disney has basically buried this series: it's not available streaming, on DVD/Blu-Ray, or even digitally, but savvy Googlers should be able to find a place to watch it. (And soon it could even be available on Disney's streaming service, along with a bunch of TV cartoons that never saw the light of day again after their initial run.)

Garfield's Halloween Adventure [Patreon Date: 10/22/18 - Free Feed Date 10/29/18]

Our Halloween treat for you this year comes in the form of Garfield's Halloween Adventure, a blast from the past that unexpectedly terrified kids from the '80s. Garfield might be cheesy meme-fodder these days, but once upon a time the Garfield brand had class. And this cartoon even won an Emmy! Also, this special features the first and possibly only time Garfield gets excited about something that isn't eating, sleeping, or Nermal torture. You can buy Garfield's Halloween Adventure digitally on Amazon Prime, or watch one of the many versions of it uploaded to YouTube (some with the original commercials!).

The Maxx - Episode 1 [Patreon Date: 10/29/18 - Free Feed Date 11/5/18]

To close out the month of October, we'll be doing an episode on The Maxx, one of the '90s classics that helped define MTV Animation. This amazing series adapts Sam Keith's equally amazing comic on a very small budget, and marks the first production of the fantastic Rough Draft Studios (who also produced Futurama and Disenchantment). While many comic book adaptations of the decade swung and missed, this one remains slavishly faithful to the comics—even right down to the individual panels—and somehow gave the series a more satisfying ending than the comic itself. Currently, you can watch The Maxx digitally on Amazon Prime, or via a very comprehensive DVD set with commentary tracks for every episode.

So that's what coming at you in October. We've got a huge month of episodes ahead of us, and THREE live shows on top of that, so we hope you're as excited as us! And if you're one of our patrons, look forward to even more surprises on top of our regularly planned podcasts. Have a great month, boils and ghouls!

Finally, The Maxx! I was literally just trying to explain this cartoon to my wife and I just couldn't. I'm really looking forward to this one!

Anyone curious about House of Mouse can find a few episodes on Netflix. They seem to only carry the holiday themed ones and I know there's at least a Halloween one (House of Villains) and a Christmas one on there right now as my kids have made me watch them recently. I'm interested in seeing how that episode turns out since the show is basically just packaged shorts, old and new, with some wrap-around animation. I've been hoping you guys would tackle some classic cartoon shorts but wasn't sure how well they would work in the WAC format, but if the HoM episode works out well enough, then maybe that can lead to more episodes on short subjects.

As a 90's kid with a sister significantly younger, I'm pretty sure I've seen at least a little House of Mouse on ABC on their Saturday Morning. I have no memories about it, even to the extent of a One Saturday morning show like Recess or Fillmore. Also to nitpick about comics, the Maxx's creator's name is spelled "Sam Kieth," not Sam Keith, for some raisin.

House of Mouse is buried because the current brass is *really* embarrassed by the "classically" done Mickey and co. shows done in the late '90s/early '00s, and have been for years. It's all about those puppety SpongeMick MousePants shorts now.

Wow the Maxx, haven't seen that in years. Reminds me, a Liquid television episode would be awesome....or I'll settle for the Head or Aeon Flux

Frank Grimes

Really looking forward to the Jojo episode! I've been a fan of the series since Viz first published it back when reading the other parts of the series meant struggling through bad translations on seedy manga sites. I'm glad that the TV series has brought more visibility and popularity to Jojo.
