What A Cartoon! - House of Mouse "Jiminy Cricket"

Thanks to patron Alex Irish, What A Cartoon! is exploring new territory: A Disney television show from the 21st century! In case you didn't know, House of Mouse exists as the first real revival of classic Disney shorts, created more than a decade before the one that actually took. This 2001-2003 series takes a new framing device and wraps it around cartoons both new and old for a Disney love-in that's the perfect chaser for their reign over the go-go '90s. On this episode, Matthew Jay of Cartoons 101 joins us to explore the titular House of Mouse and its somewhat modern take on Jiminy Cricket.

Really good discussion at the opening of the show. The return to the classic Looney Tunes characterization reminds me of the "rubber band theory" of comic book characters. I first read of this in Scott Tipton's Comics 101 blog concerning Supergirl. She was initially Superman's cousin. Then, as Henry probably knows, things got weird https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supergirl#Post-Crisis_versions Dan Didio looked at the character and realized how long it took to explain her and rolled her back to Superman's cousin. So the idea is the rubber band can only stretch out so many ways before it returns to it's original form.

Let’s not overstate how many actual classic cartoons were used on HoM: Mickey and the Seal Goofy Gymnastics Pluto’s Christmas Tree Lonesome Ghosts Donald Duck and the Gorilla Trick or Treat The Whoopee Party Up a Tree Two Chips and a Miss Beezy Bear and clips from Motor Mania and Symphony Hour. And remember, this out of 52 episodes, and most of them were in the DTV movies. From a budget standpoint, it would’ve made sense to use even more of the older shorts...
