I believe you're thinking of "You Wish," something I had buried deep in the recesses of my mind

Your discussion of I Dream of Genie reminded me of another live action show I saw as a kid ALSO about a person finding a magical genie who lives with them. Except in this case it was a single mother finding a magical boy genie? Which kinda turned the power dynamic on its head. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me I just know it was made by the people who made Boy Meets World if I recall correctly.

On the subject of studio audience laugh tracks, there's a great e[pisode of RadioLab that explains why the audiences seemed so insanely enthusiastic in the 80s/90s. Long story short on the set of "The Nanny" Fran Drescher started to refuse to be in front of a crowd of strangers following her home invasion. To tackle this the producers started hiring professional Extras to fill the audience, so you had a whole crowd of over the top actors laughing excessively at every joke. This trend contuinued on other shows to give the same effect but slowly died down. The whole episode's here https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/91588-laughter
