Talking Simpsons - The Principal and the Pauper LIVE With Allie Goertz and Julia Prescott

So it's come to this... We've finally reached one of the most infamous episodes of The Simpsons, and we're giving it the deluxe podcast treatment! Allie Goertz and Julia Prescott of the great podcast Everything's Coming Up Simpsons join us live at the Gateway Theatre for our 2019 San Francisco Sketchfest show to discuss the Seymour Skinner story that set alt-dot-tv-dot-simpsons (and perhaps the world) on fire back in 1997. Will The Principal and the Pauper go down as a secretly great episode, or will we taunt and boo writer Ken Keeler until our throats are sore? Put down Armin's copy of Swank, because this is one episode of Talking Simpsons you can't miss!

[Note: The audio levels are a little off for the first eight minutes, but should sound perfectly fine after that.]

I was surprised to hear that the writer denied the influence of "The Return of Martin Guerre" as it wasn't *just* a French film (with Gérard Depardieu before he became a fat spy) but it was a novel before, written by a Princeton professor that was based on an actual case of identity theft in the 16th century (the basic facts and essential people are the same as the movie). In fact, reading Keeler's quote on the matter: "The pattern of facts is clearly the Tichborne claimant story, and not Martin Guerre." Is strange because the pattern of the episode doesn't match up with the Tichborne claimant story any better than with Matin Guerre (I'd say less so even)

My mistake!

Just wanted to kindly correct that it was HENRY who said Armin and Agnes has a consensual sub-dom relationship because I will never, ever, ever forget that

This was a really fun podcast and I think gives more legitimacy to this episode that was needed. It's really funny, really quotable, and does give dimension to Skinner in a way I like but does go off the rails in the way some many things happened to The Simpsons When Allie and Julia said that line "Is Agnes and Armen just a low-key domsub situation" that kinda broke my brain because it's a way better way of putting what would happen to those characters. Agnes I think became one of the most detestable, flanderized characters in the modern Simpsons era cause her only purpose is to emasculate and torture her fake son, not even be used as a funny one off character in episodes like "The Twisted World of Marge Simpson" If I do have a big problem with this episode, it is how the third act is kinda lame and rushed and demands the audience to go "What you saw was pointless, obey the status quo." Something that really would bleed into later episodes so many times when they couldn't think of an ending. I get what Keeler was aiming for making fun of sitcoms doing things like that, but so many ridiculous, sitcomy-things happened to The Simpsons and even tertiary characters (Homer has a twin brother) that DID stay canon that it feels weird to give up on it now. Looking forward to the rest of Season 9!
