What A Cartoon Movie! - Akira

What A Cartoon! is about to E*X*P*L*O*D*E thanks to this month's selection! Our patrons demanded it, so we're finally digging deep into Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 masterpiece that made anime catch fire in the USA. So just what makes Akira so special? In our longest podcast to date (seriously!) we cover everything we can, including Akira's manga roots, the cultural context surrounding the movie, the life and work of Otomo, its many American releases and re-releases, and so much more! And, of course, we give our beat-by-beat analysis of the movie, with plenty of fun tangents to spare. Thanks so much for supporting the Talking Simpsons Network and giving us a chance to re-explore this amazing film!

This is one where a revisit would be great, some of the newer eps seem to go more in-depth. Think there was some more info in the Retronauts ep.

This is great so far (I'm half an hour in). One thing: Fireball was published in English in a collection of Otomo shorts titled Memories (it also featured Magnetic Rose). Published by an obscure British press called Mandarin in the mid 90s. A cool thing about this volume is it has short blurbs about each story by Otomo. Also, one of his live action films is worth mentioning for the Kon connection (Kon-ection? Eh? Eh?):. I believe World Apartment Horror was adapted from a manga by Kon. I've seen the movie a long time ago (it's fine) but haven't read the manga.
