What A Cartoon! - Archer "Skytanic"

Thanks to the generous contributions of Patron David Whittington, we're finally taking a look at Archer, FX's surprising spy hit that's quickly coming up on its tenth birthday. The folks who brought you Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo basically took everything that made those shows great and turned them up to 11, while adding more sex, drugs, violence, and H. Jon Benjamin. And for this podcast, we'll be looking at the season one episode "Skytanic," featuring a fake bomb threat, a real bomb threat, education on flammable gases, and a lesson on the importance of using the NATO phonetic alphabet. Grab a martini and watch your phrasing, because we're about to dig into one of the funniest animated series of the past decade!

Great choice for an episode, but I think "Lo Scandalo" is the peak of the series. One of you (Bob I think) said he hadn't watched after season 2, and I highly recommend he check out that one at the very least. Nonetheless, I was laughing along with clips from this one and Archer's inability to grasp the blimp won't blow up from smoking a cigarette. "Jesus, Lana, the helium!"

I love the first few seasons of Archer. It's comedic timing and strong characters are what propel it for me. It doesn't matter that much what the characters are up to or what the setting is because the dynamic works so well. The more recent seasons though definitely lack the energy of the first few. Part of that is probably due to how reliant the show is on repeat gags and references that eventually the show, rightly, moves on from. There's just no replacement for them and the show has felt a bit directionless. Regular viewers probably got the sense that Reed wasn't as invested in it anymore and it seems like that is indeed what has happened. The worst season of Archer is still acceptable television, but I do hope that when it comes to an end it finds some that old spark to at least go out on a high note.
