I enjoyed Bob sitting in the corner, while Kat and Henry go in deep on Gundam.

Being an elderly man of 38 I missed the whole Gundam Wing on Toonami thing but my gf made sure that I was all caught up when we watched the whole series a few years ago. Since then we've been to the cafe in Osaka and we bought a few models that she has all put together. I told her that I'm a Gundam expert now that I've listened this podcast so she said that we'll have to watch some more in the future which I'm all for.

Awesome ep! After I listened to it, I searched on YouTube for the actual episode, and rather than finding the episode of the cartoon itself I found a cool podcast that does the Talking Simpsons treatment to Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Breakdown. It's really good! Maybe would be cool to Ghost Star n drive some traffic? http://gundampodcast.com/

I didn't really get into Gundam until just last year. When it was airing on Toonami all those years ago, I didn't like Wing because I didn't understand it and ignored 0079 because it looked old and crappy. Nowadays I actually like the look of old anime, so I watched the original TV series on bluray last year. Since then, I've watched the entire UC series in production order (though skipping that CG one I heard was really crappy) and G Gundam. I plan on watching the rest of the franchise though I've heard people have... mixed thoughts about some of them. I've also got to hand it to the franchise for getting me into model building, although I now have stacks of unopened model kits and not much time to work on them.

Proud to be maybe 5 people on Earth who went 'Yes!' out loud when Kat namedropped Xabungle as a good Tomino show to watch. Since you guys very briefly touched on the Gunpla side of things, I wanna recommend the original Gundam Build Fighters show. As someone also not really into Gunplay I still found that show enjoyable; it's a pretty cromulent sports anime where the sport is building custom Gunpla and then making them fight through techno magic. The dynamic between the two main characters is pretty great, with one of them being a huge huge Gundam nerd who's ultimately kinda a crappy pilot and his new friend who's a natural at piloting but knows dick all about Gundam. And there's a lot of other fun characters like a guy who successfully flirts with women by showing off his Gunpla and just straight up Ramba Ral as a mentor for the main characters. All in all it's a silly light-hearted show that still manages to be enjoyable despite the admittedly masturbatory premise of an official Gundam show talking about how cool and awesome the Gundam franchise is. Also while you guys mentioned some Gundam shows on Hulu, there's also Crunchyroll (which has a bunch of stuff like G Gundam, Wing, and 00) and the official GundamInfo Youtube which does this weird thing of rotating shows on and off that channel.

Did you know? Char's Counterattack is referenced in name in the title of the first Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back! (aka Mewtwo's Counterattack!)

I will not allow this Guntank defamation to stand: https://cdn.4archive.org/img/0YIovJ4.jpg !

Some Gundam trivia: - The three 0079 movies were dubbed and released on VHS in 1998. The dub is...not great. But it features the GunDAMN and British Bright. https://youtu.be/-zXQYsYwmxo?t=16 - In 1989, there was a proposal to "adapt" SD Gundam for the US childrens market as "Doozy Bots". It's about a group of demographically balanced 80's teen athletes who get turned into SD Gundam mechs...I mean, Doozy Bots (a little too on the nose: the kid in the wheelchair becomes a Guntank). They have to fight evil robots who want to "rob the world of fun". The pitch video is hilariously awful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8um1N78AhY. Imagine a world where this and the two live-action American Sailor Moon adaptations were actually made...

Appreciate it. I think I went with power in this episode tbh 😅

Oh my god, Kat, if you were any more of a dork you would explode in a confetti of thick rimmed, taped up glasses, and I LOVE YOU for it. I so enjoy when you come on the show because when you do, I know school is in session and we gonna git details. I keep up with you and Nadia on Axe of the Blood God as well. Really enjoyed this. Thanks, Bob and Henry for pulling her in (as if you could have kept her out!).

Gundam Wing was so bad. I watched the whole thing on Toonami because it was just so damn nice looking. I loved the robots and the action was great, but the story, characters, and just about everything else was a slog. And it was made more obvious by having DBZ as the lead-in for it with it's silly, over the top, stakes. Once this show started airing I was a day one viewer, and while I was liking the general plot and pacing, it was just so hideous to look at. I watched the first few weeks and then I started drifting in and out until it was cancelled. I really would like to revisit it someday and give it another try. I just always found it interesting how the only part I liked about Wing is what turned me off from this one.

As an example of how ingrained Gundam is in Japanese culture, just last week my karate teacher used the Rick Dom as an example of how long the cloth below the belt on a gi should be.

I'm probably one of the few and proud who's first exposure to Gundam was through G Gundam. You'd have to imagine my shock when I went looking through other Gundam series and found out that none of them were like G in the slightest. But despite that I'm currently making my way through the UC timeline slowly but surely, G Gundam will always hold a special place in my heart for its sheer audacity and craziness that made me fall in love with the medium of anime.
