Talking Simpsons - The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons With Shivam Bhatt
Added 2019-02-27 05:00:03 +0000 UTC
Our funny friend Shivam Bhatt (co-host of the Commanderin' podcast) returns, and he's here to share his knowledge of Hindu weddings and religion in this week's podcast! Apu is the focus of another episode, where he lies to his mother to avoid an arranged marriage. Will the lie set him free or will Homer's many schemes hurt the hotblooded bachelor? Listen now for laughs and knowledge!
Lisa's "What's the deal with that dot?" 100% feels like a direct quote from a dude in the writers' room, as opposed to something Lisa would ever say. Regardless of her knowledge of Hinduism, she would know to be polite about it at the very least. Contrast this line with her respect for Krusty's Judaism in "Like Father, Like Clown," for example.

My mother grew up in the ‘50s and used to sing me this song with the lyrics “What’s your name, little boy?” “My name is Lemmy.” “Lemmy what, little boy?” “Lenny kiss you.” The fact that is creepy as Hell aside, I BET LEMMY WAS SHORT FOR LEMUEL. OH, My GOD.

P.S. My sister was once not allowed to play with a kid because their parents were divorced.

I can completely relate to Shivam re: the frustration of well-meaning western friends giving impractical advice on how to deal with non-western parental problems. If someone you know is having issues with their family of another culture, the best thing you can do is put your "why don't you just"s aside and LISTEN. You don't understand how different things are for us.

I still enjoyed this episode, but even without all of the knowledge that Shivam brought onto the show (great guest again btw), I definitely felt really uncomfortable with a lot of it.
As you guys said in the episode, a lot of the problematic content of the episode was likely not done with malice, and some of the errors come from legitimately not knowing something they couldn't really perceive with any ease. To me, that's kind of the perfect argument for why increased diversity in creative staffs (or all jobs) is important. Sure, we may not understand that something we do is offensive in one way or another, but if you have a staff made up of people from all kinds of groups, then someone *will* know and be able to call it out before it gets put out in the first place. Certainly that's not to say people should only write about their own backgrounds, but if you have a group working on a variety of projects together, that melting pot will just sift out any innocent mistakes before it reaches the public and inevitably ends with harsh defensiveness from white people.

Maybe my math is off but when Henry quotes the statistic of 4% or arranged marriages end in divorce isn’t that 1 in 25? So either the rate has stayed the same since this episode first aired or we got some more ‘The Simpsons predict the future’ shenanigans.

"Bart Star" was the herald for the return of "Jerk-Ass" Homer, and this episode just drives it home. He's just so self-centered to the point of apathy and he gives not a single shit for Apu's dilemma nor the baggage he's saddling Marge with. And I'm not saying this Homer isn't funny or anything, it just leads to some weird tonal shifts from episode to episode as the season moves along. And I tend to agree with Shivam that some of Homer's callousness feels like the writers projecting their feelings on having to research and do a lot of work on getting the Indian culture represented in a satisfactory manner. It doesn't feel malicious, necessarily, but by the end of the episode I'm a little burnt out.

The only other time I've heard the name Lemuel used is in the second season of The Punisher, where it's the name of a VERY religious man's son.

I think Shivam has been my favorite guest on the show. I really like all the information that he brings to the table. I work with a lot of people people from India and while I know how diverse the country is, it is nice to learn things about the history of India, cultural relations and other things I'm too afraid to ask. I hope to see Shivam back for more episodes. Thanks guys!

Always love when you guys have Shivam as a guest, as an Indian with about as much cultural awareness as Bart and Lisa I really appreciate his insight. For what it's worth I loved the Homer as Ganesh joke, and my girlfriend and I fully intend on having a friend interrupt our wedding similarly when the time comes.

I knew most of what was told by Shivam thanks to my study’s, but hearing it from a professional like him made it feel like I was learning it all over! Great choice for a guest even though I totally want to hear him on a non-Apu episode 😂

Great episode, guys. Definitely made me think back to other times where Homer's ignorance towards other cultures is explored.
For example, in "Homer's Phobia", it's explictly stated that he's "embarassing himself" with regards to his attitude towards gay people. Perhaps if something like this had been present here then the episode might have felt more culturally sensitive. Lisa being more knowledgeable would have helped make it clear how ignorant Homer's actions are, rather than Apu having to accept his abuse with gentle good humour.
Just to be clear, I don't think the writer's hearts were in the wrong place but if you want to lampoon something, you really need to make sure you know what you're talking about.
Anyway, keep up the great work. ^_^

I absolutely loved the Homer at the Old folks home plot. I always use "Here I am...like a sucker" lines.
