What A Cartoon! - Doug "Doug Takes the Case / Doug's Secret Song"

We've covered two of the original three Nicktoons in our first year of What A Cartoon!, but what of Doug, the gentle, be-vested boy who has problems much like our own? Though his 52 episodes didn't cause the same stir on Nickelodeon as Rugrats or The Ren & Stimpy Show, Jim Jinkins' laid-back cartoon stands as an early pioneer in the slice-of-life genre of children's entertainment. This week, Greg of the amazing YouTube channel Pop Arena joins us to explore the animated adventures of a not-so-animated kid.

Weird personal connection to the show: David Campbell went to Harding University, the small school in the middle of Arkansas where my parents taught and I eventually attended. For years, my dad had an office right next to David Campbell’s mom, who ran the university’s aquatic programming and taught me how to swim. Anyway, always heard great things about Campbell but I’ve yet to meet him.

Like others, Doug was initially my favorite Nicktoon because I was a Doug, unfortunately. Obviously a couple years younger (I think I was 9 when it premiered?) but like many pre-teens (or pre-pre-teens, in this case) I was insecure, had weird fantasies, etc... By the time I hit Doug's actual age, I think the only thing that changed was I had less of the weird fantasies...not ZERO, mind you, just less of them and not really any that involved being a super hero or secret agent. Speaking of, if any 20 or 30-something person out there needs an easy Halloween costume at the last minute, you can't beat Quail Man. You probably already have everything you need...green vest, khaki shorts, a belt for your head, a red towel for a cape, and a pair of tighty-whities. And EVERYONE will love it. It won't matter that there's half a dozen other Quail-Men or Dougs in the immediate vicinity, everyone will have to come up to you to explain how they loved Doug. A very
