What A Cartoon Movie! - The Secret of NIMH

Out of the ashes of a failing Disney rose Don Bluth Productions, an animation studio staffed by artists who strived to recapture their former employer's golden era of animation. Their first work, 1982's The Secret of NIMH, would go on to be a beloved movie, and one remembered much more fondly than the Disney animated features surrounding its release. Though it has its flaws, NIMH stands as a gorgeous labor of love that both wowed and traumatized an audience of Gen Xers and Millennials alike. This month on What A Cartoon Movie!, listen in as we explore The Secret of NIMH and the fascinating history that led to its creation.

If you'd like some more extracurricular material on Secret of NIMH, here is an excerpt from the 1994 edition of Enchanted Drawings by Charles Solomon on his disdain for the film as a narrative work: "NIMH suffered from poor storytelling, fussy character design, and a tendency toward visual overkill. [It] was a film that looked backwards rather than forwards." I also recommend this video essay that touches on NIMH's science vs nature vs faith message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34a3qRUZcYA&t=532s and for lols, a review of the sequel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JknHQllRG5g

I think you guys mentioned you didn't know anyone who saw the movie when it was in theatres, well my roommate who was 4 at the time of it's release actually saw it in the theater. He said bearing in mind he was 4 years old, he thought it was great but didn't know what the hell was going on and being very confused by Nicodemus's death.
