What A Cartoon! - Pinky and the Brain "It's Only a Paper World"
Added 2019-04-08 04:00:01 +0000 UTC
Narf! Out of all the characters spawned by 1993's Animaniacs, one rodent duo rose far above the rest—even higher in stature than the Warner brothers and their sister, Dot. That would be Pinky and the Brain, a pair of diminutive lab mice with spliced genes and big ambitions. So only makes sense that the two would eventually get their own series for 66 glorious episodes on The WB, another misguided creation that couldn't quite conquer the world, either. This week, we prove our mousey worth by looking at Pinky and the Brain's second season premiere, "It's Only a Paper World."

Since Bob mentioned Frisk mints, I found out that they were a food fad in Japan in the early 90's, and to this day there is a comedian on a very popular variety show who always puts Frisk mints in food to disgust his fellow panelists.

Just getting to this episode. Small correction, the Welles Peeps ad, while hilarious, is a photoshop (<a href="https://imgur.com/gallery/SpsCc4d)." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://imgur.com/gallery/SpsCc4d).</a> it does seem likely that he would love Peeps though, he was apparently a huge fan of fudgesicles.

I was probably 8 or 9 when Histeria started airing and to be honest I absolutely loved it - if I had to watch something to do with History I preferred that to Liberty’s Kids (barf). I did start to get weirded out by how hard they went on Father Time and that baby for advertising KidsWB though.
I was also a big watcher of Pinky and the Brain as an 8 year old, even though I understood none of it. I liked it because my mom would watch it with me, even though I didn’t understand what she was laughing at most of the time. Even now as a 30 year old sometimes I have to research the jokes because they’re such deep cuts I still don’t get them. Even so it was a great show and I wish Amblin type shows would come back.

It's likely because of my age, but I watched way more of Pinky & the Brain than Tiny Toons and Animaniacs combined and it was something I used to reference A LOT (specifically with things like 'the same thing we do every night...' and 'NARF!') but I hadn't watched it in YEARS so going back to it here was a burst of trippy nostalgia and now I wanna rewatch ALL OF IT

We didn't get the WB when I was growing up so despite being a huge Animaniacs fan, I never saw "Pinky and the Brain," and it was fun to experience it second hand. (I also have zero knowledge of "Dawson's Creek," making me an outlier among my fellow old millennials.) Regarding the Elmyra push . . . when I was a six-year-old "Tiny Toon Adventuress" fanatic, my best friend asked me who I thought was the prettiest character on the show (as six-year-olds do), and I said Elmyra, Elmyra being the only human female after all. My friend, absolutely disgusted by my answer, responded with "You think Elmyra is prettier than BABS?!" I quickly backtracked, and fiercely hated Elmyra after that. . . . but maybe (as I think you alluded to) the evil execs were thinking "little girl human = appeal to actual little girl humans"? It did briefly work on me. Also, I did not realize that Elmyra was an Elmer Fudd parallel until I was much older, as, in addition to not being a good judge of toon attractiveness, I am also apparently very dumb. I don't think it was until I saw "Colonel Homer" in syndication and realized the Fudd/Duff connection (Elmyra Duff). that it clicked. Anyway, great episode as usual. Thanks for making a two-hour early Monday morning run bearable!

The music cue from the fake earth is the first movement of Dvorak Symphony no. 9 “From the New World”. So add that to the list of old timey references; written in 1893

For the 'where did they get all that money' situations, I always think they just put it on the Acme Labs bill.

Have you guys ever heard of Wakfu? it's a French cartoon animated entirely in flash and despite that it's very well animated. Would love to hear a whatacartoon on that one

While this is more on Animaniacs territory my favorite Pinky and the Brain cartoon is Bubba Bo Bob Brain. To this day when Brain sits down to be interviewed by the talk show host it still has my mom and sisters all in tears with laughter. Even the line he gives to Dolly Parton about her breasts as he is seated is so funny. I think I paused the DVD so many times to get my laughter out.
Also what do you have against the Goodfeathers? That was second to Pinky and the Brain for me.

I'll admit the one thing about Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs that sticks with me to this day is this random 4chan thread that basically did a fictionalized 'where are they now' for all of them: <a href="https://i.imgur.com/ttOe72h.png" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.imgur.com/ttOe72h.png</a>

Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche were special guests (in character) on a recent Postmodern Jukebox song. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqMs9WsJg2k" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqMs9WsJg2k</a>
