Talking Simpsons - The Last Temptation of Krust With Ian Boothby

For this dive into the world of comedy, we're joined by a writer/comedian who has worked for Matt Groening AND Adam Sandler, Ian Boothby! (Check out Sparks and Exorsisters, as well as the Sneaky Dragon podcast!) Krusty is a tired hack with racist comedy, and he's not sure where to go, so he turns to Jay Leno for help. But even when he finds a way to tell the truth, can he resist the call of Canyonero? We're telling it like it is, and this podcast is a squirrel squashing, deer smacking, driving machine!!

Comments

Ian was such a fantastic guest! I'd love to hear him again on future episodes.

Yeah, ever since Like Father Like Clown where he slowly reads Bart’s letter, I assumed he had started to learn to read at that point and by season 4 Krusty could read cue cards well enough to say “talk to the audience?!” - Henry

Talking Simpsons

There's been many instances of him reading (mostly cue cards) between "Krusty Gets Busted" and this ep, so he stopped being illiterate long ago.

I haven’t seen this episode in a long time but isn’t Krusty supposed to be illiterate? Him reading the newspaper wouldn’t make any sense.

Bart's impression of Marge during "Bart's Comedy Jam" is such a great-bad Marge impression, and one that my sister and I would do back and forth all the time for years. -- Also, Homer wanting to tell it like it is and then immediately being upset when Marge does it back REALLY is every conservative ever in 2019.

For some reason this episode is not showing up in the patron feed on Apple Podcasts? Anyone else having this issue? When I search for it shows only last weeks. I can download manually but it's not working in the feed. Also not showing up here: https://talkingsimpsons.libsyn.com/

We started the Patreon in season five, so those episodes aren't here (there's no way to backdate posts on Patreon). All free episodes of the show--including the ones you're missing--can be found here: https://talkingsimpsons.libsyn.com

I love Marge's naivety in believing that Gil the shoe salesman is such a an expert in his chosen profession that he will be able to pinpoint the EXACT shoe that she thinks the kids need. Reminds me of Marge purchasing Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenege "I asked the clerk which is the one every boy wants!" , and my mom trying to buy a computer at Best Buy. Also, I always get the Store Sock joke mixed up in my head with a Futurama joke where Fry wants to buy Lightspeed Briefs, and has to try on the store pair, which look much like the Store Sock, only the clerk sprays them with disinfectant first, and I always except Gil to do that there.

Sorry to leave a comment here about this. I just joined patreon to get access to season 1 - 4. But no I can't seem to access season 1 - 4 episodes. I found season 1 that is dated as a 2017 posting. But I know that season 2 episodes go back to 2015. The podcast feed doesn't go below 2017. Please advice. Thank You.

Also, with the burning of the money, did this show predict angry swarths of right wingers smashing their keurigs and burning their nikes?

Bart's comment of "jesus wore sandals" rang so true with me as a kid, because I used to say derivatives of that phrase constantly whenever I had to dress up at church/work. I honestly probably picked it up from this show. Even still, I could genuinely never understand why if 'WWJD" was the standard, we had to dress a certain way to do anything. Which is funny now because according to my family members who still go to church (Catholics, Lutherans, UCC), people basically wear sweatpants these days. The argument actually worked pretty well at my last university, which was catholic, I wore whatever I wanted all the time, but I was also a graduate student. At my current university which is non denominational (and I technically worked for a subsidiary of the university) I've had less success having to rely on actual studies that demonstrate the value in letting people dress however they want if its appropriate (as in, wear pants and shoes in a metal shop) rather than simply using my knowledge of the bible to make a lazy, somewhat snide argument. Go figure. One day I will once again know the joy of wearing a megaman shirt, shorts, and sandals to work. At least i work from home a lot, and I can show them by staying home on election day and dressing like a clown.

This episode serves as a good demonstration of the show's comedy strengths and weaknesses. When they try to do more grounded, observational humour (like Krusty pursuing observational stand-up routines), it's fine and all, but not as good as their crazy over-the-top satire (the Canyonero ad). Krusty is ultimately his best self when he returns to his wackier material, much like this episode.

The advice to not stick Q-tips in your ears is solid. I once had the cotton end of one come off the stem and get stuck in my ear. I had to go to an urgent care clinic to get it taken out. I suppose I could have attempted to take it out myself, but I didn't know where any tweezers were and was a little squeamish about sticking a point object onto a place it didn't belong without being able to see what I was aiming for. Between paperwork, waiting on the doctor and removal, I was maybe in the building 10 minutes max. The bill for this "operation?" $50. God I hate the American healthcare system.

I hated shopping for shoes as a kid too. They were always uncomfortable and I was very picky. Then when I was like 20 I found out shoes come in different widths. Once I put that first 4E shoe on, I didn't care what it looked like. Wish I had known that sooner.

As much as I love the Canyonero bit at the end, this isn’t one of my favorite episodes to revisit. Someone pointed out elsewhere that comedy ages like milk (and only some can become delicious cheese), and this episode and the focus on angry white dude stand up really just feels awfully mediocre these days.
