What A Cartoon! - The Promised Neverland "121045"

Thanks to the generous contributions of patron David Whittington, we're heading back to anime country with the newest series we've ever featured on What A Cartoon! Back when it initially started running in the weekly Japanese comic anthology Shonen Jump in 2016, The Promised Neverland quickly became one of the publication's most popular series, so it was only time until it received an anime adaptation. And, lucky for us, this well-animated interpretation of the source material adapts the manga very faithfully, while amping up certain elements that play better off the page. If you've never heard of The Promised Neverland, you're sure to love its compelling premise and plot full of surprising twists and satisfying payoffs, and we can't wait to walk you through its debut episode!

I had been seeing ads for this show when watching Toonami and wanted to check it out, but I always need more than a nudge to check out a new show and this edition of WAC qualified. I was done with my usual TV viewing last night but still had about 8oz of beer to finish so I figured I'd put it on and then listen to this episode the next day. Apparently I was a lot more tired than I thought and I struggled a bit to get through the episode, but figured this would fill in the holes. It did not. It only made me more confused over what I had just watched. I decided to check out an episode guide and then I figured it out: I accidentally watched episode 3 instead of 1. I'd fire myself for that blunder if I could, but hey, you guys made the show sound super-interesting so I'll go back and watch the correct episode either tonight or soonish and get this whole thing straightened out in my mind.

I still need to watch the rest of the anime, but the manga is super cool. About 10 volumes in because I'm just reading the physical volumes. It was cool listening to an ep about a modern show!

Henry how can you sell out Dragon Ball GT like that. Although it was rushed Toriyama did do designs for Super Saiyan 4 and for character sheets. Loved the podcast episode though.

VERY glad that I decided at the last minute to read the first chapter of the comic at lunch before listening to this episode.

Also I kinda feel the central conflict between Emma and Ray is more idealism vs pragmatism than it is facts vs feelings although I guess there's an element of that in there too. I also like how at the eventual end to the season the solution they come up with is a sort of compromise between those two viewpoints (hopefully that explains what I mean without spoiling things for people too much).

Just FYI we can in fact watch Promised Neverland on Crunchyroll in Canada.
