TalKing of the Hill - Plastic White Female

After learning about the birds and the bees way back in episode two, Bobby is finally ready for love. Unfortunately for everyone else, he falls head over heels for Luanne's beauty academy practice head she needs to properly style in order to graduate. Will Bobby get over his crush on an inanimate object in time to kiss non-plastic lips at Joseph's boy/girl party? And will his fixation on the head prevent Luanne from finally achieving the status of skilled beautician? Find out the answers to these questions and how The Muppets warped a generation of children by listening to this week's podcast!

TalKing of the Hill - Plastic White Female

Comments

I'm just catching up on TalKing of the Hill, but as a longtime fan of The Misfits and Danzig I just had to make a comment (so stop reading now if you don't care because I have a hard time being brief on the subject). The Misfits are a classic case of a band becoming popular long after it disbanded in 1983. Glenn Danzig went on to other projects, most famous for the song "Mother" released under the band name Danzig, but while doing other stuff he we would re-release old Misfits recordings and eventually got a label to distribute it in Caroline Records. A combination of those releases, plus new exposure through the likes of Metallica and Guns N Roses, the band became somewhat popular in the 90s. Because of that, the old members reformed, but when Danzig rebuffed them they got a new singer. There was legal trouble and stuff to sort out as Danzig was the sole credited songwriter so he controlled the whole thing. When that new album came out in 97 I was in middle school and wanted it to be good so there would be a version of The Misfits for me to enjoy in the present, but sadly it was pretty terrible. The Misfits, being a punk band, were never very talented, but Danzig could at least construct a song and had an ear for melody. The new band was more like a parody, and it only got worse. Bravo to whoever picked the music for this episode, as a classic Danzig-era song was picked which is always the right move when approaching The Misfits. Now the band is yet another nostalgia act and has played one or two shows per year the last couple of years with Danzig restored as the frontman. I saw the band last year in NJ (where they're from) and it was pretty surreal to see an act I never thought I would see. A big pay day seems to have a unifying effect on everyone though. And on the subject of wrestling, interestingly while WCW had The Misfits coming around, WWF was in talks with Danzig (who can often be found backstage when WWE comes to LA) about doing a song for Undertaker. They never could agree on money though, but it just speaks to the era where if one wrestling company had an act, the other was always looking for a counter. Coincidentally, a couple of years ago Danzig put out a song called "Last Ride" that feels like it was written for an Undertaker video package.

Two comments about this: First, you'd think Kevin Farley has been near enough tragedy in his life but... part of the reason 2gether (the MTV fake boy band) didn't last is because one of the other singers (Michael Cuccione) passed away due to complications from cancer at the age of 16. He had suffered from Hodgkin's lymphoma, and while it eventually was in full remission, the side effects of his treatment caused permanent damage and his far too young death. Second, and less sad, I can definitely relate to some of the overprotectiveness shown by Peggy and Henry's Mom. In high school I played in the orchestra of a youth theater group, but was not allowed to attend the cast party after the final show. Why? When my Mom was dropping me off, she saw someone smoking outside and refused to let me out of the car. I was livid but couldn't persuade her I'd be safe once I was inside the house.
