What A Cartoon! - The June Schedule

Summer has truly begun, which means it's time to sit inside and watch cartoons! And then maybe sit outside in the hot sun and listen to our podcasts. (But don't let us tell you how to run your life.) This month, we've got our usual varied selection, as June kicks off with '80s shlock, jumps back to the '70s for a well-known Disney classic, then ends in the '90s with an obscure gem followed by a slightly different take on a highly influential series.

And if you're not a subscriber, signing up at the $5 level will get you each episode a week ahead of time and ad-free, along with our past exclusive miniseries (like our recently wrapped TalKing of the Hill) and dozens and dozens of bonus podcasts on top of that!

Here's what's on the schedule for June:

Thundarr the Barbarian - "Secret of the Black Pearl" [Patreon Date: 6/3/19 - Free Feed Date 6/10/19]

Of all the cartoon barbarian series to ever launch, this one might have the highest degree of talent associated with it (and unfortunately, it's also the goofiest). Created by Howard the Duck co-creator and comics legend Steve Gerber, and with art by industry titans Jack Kirby and Alex Toth, Thundarr tells the story of a very stupid man wrapped up in the conflicts of a post-apocalyptic Hyborian Age future. As expected, it's very, very silly, and we have an absolute blast taking it apart!

Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too [Patreon Date: 6/10/19 - Free Feed Date 6/17/19]

The post-Walt and pre-Little Mermaid period wasn't great for Disney, but the Winnie the Pooh shorts (later compiled into a full movie) remain some of the best material they produced during that era. Let us help you forget about the dreadful Christopher Robin movie with our look at one the best Pooh cartoons, and one that focuses on the most lovable (or at least the bounciest) character.

Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys - "Yes, We Have No Bananas, Part 1" [Patreon Date: 6/17/19 - Free Feed Date 6/24/19]

If you blinked at some point between 1996 and 1997, you likely missed Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys, a sci-fi show much smarter than its goofy title might imply. Created by Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain scribe Gordon Bressack, Captain Simian follows the adventures of a former NASA test monkey who recruits a highly-skilled group of fellow simians to stop the evil plans of Lord Nebula, the series half-human/half-black hole supervillain. Odds are you probably missed this unique series, and we can't wait to show you why it's one of the worthwhile obscurities of the '90s!

The Ren & Stimpy Show - "Hermit Ren" [Patreon Date: 6/24/19 - Free Feed Date 7/1/19]

We covered Ren & Stimpy during our first month of What a Cartoon!, but now that co-creator John K. has been thoroughly disgraced (and with good cause), we've decided to shine a spotlight on one of the episodes produced after his ousting. And there's another important reason why we're taking a second look at Ren & Stimpy: Chris Reccardi (one of the best creatives behind the series) recently passed away, so we'll be taking a look at one of his greatest directorial efforts, as well as his entire career. Listen in as we celebrate the underappreciated years of Ren & Stimpy and an equally underappreciated artist!

We've got quite a lineup of podcasts ahead of us, and that isn't even counting this month's episode of the What A Cartoon Movie for $10+ patrons. Stick with us, because there'll be more fun to come, and a new limited miniseries coming at the end of the summer!
