Talking Simpsons - Girly Edition With Kat Bailey
Added 2019-06-05 04:18:55 +0000 UTC
This episode focuses on women in the media, so we welcome back our friend/USG Editor-In-Chief Kat Bailey to chat about journalism! Lisa gets her own news show but quickly gets overshadowed by Bart's empty emotionality. Somehow that all lead to a deadly battle in a junkyard, but no one remembers any of that plot because this is ALSO the episode where Homer gets a helper monkey! Pray for Mojo as you listen along to this week's podcast!!
The bit with Kent Brockman ending his segment riding on the carousel made me and my brother laugh as kids because it reminded us of a local reporter. Shaun Rabb has been at Fox 4 News here in the DFW area our entire lives and is arguably one of the better local reporters. He always ends his reports with "Shaun Rabb, Fox 4.............News" and growing up we had a bit of an inside joke where the pause would get longer and longer. When Brockman goes around the carousel before finishing his sentence we immediately included that in our jokes about Shaun Rabb's delivery.

Mojo Monkey Donuts in St. Paul is really good. They have both fancy and non-fancy donuts which is rare these days.

I loved this episode so much as a kid. When i was in high school, I got a VHS-C camera for a birthday and created my own kids news with my cousins and neighbors. We all played multiple roles in each episode. In one episode, I was a sports reporter who interviewed my cousin who pretended to be the star soccer player after a hard fought victory. Then we cut back to the anchor studio, where its me again with another shirt and the same "soccer star" cousin. However, she forgot to change out of her soccer jersey. This was years before consumer non linear editing, so we were stuck with what we had. Also, anytime I don't feel like doing something I know needs to be done, I do the mojo "nah" sound and throw my hand in the air (to my wife's chagrin).

I'm so excited that Kat brought up some Springfield location hints. That's always been one of my favorite runners in the show. David Silverman's suggestion of fictional state, "North Takoma" is my favorite, complete with the NT and 6-digit zipcode in "Mr. Lisa Goes To Washington". Although ,these days, for plot convenience seem to be leaning more into Springfield being in a state called Springfield, which is fine too.

FYI Henry, the ESPN “Chris” fight was Jim Rome. He was calling Jim Everett “Chris Everett” on his radio show for weeks, comparing his seemingly cowardly performance in one game (which saw Everett get sacked a TON) to figure skater Chris Evert. You know, it’s funny because she’s a girl. Anyway, Jim Everett came on Rome’s ESPN show and Rome introduces him as Chris. Everett said “I bet you won’t call me that again” to which Rome replied “Okay...Chris” and Everett flipped the table and attacked Rome. Then the cameras go black

Mandatory YAY KAT BAILEY! statement

You guys really hit the nail on the head with one of the episode's biggest issues being how fucking unlikeable Lisa is. Bart's kind of a prick (as usual) but Lisa really doesn't contribute anything substantial enough to be that mad at Bart for just doing the job more effectively, as kind of amoral as the job is in this case

While monkey humor is pretty trite now I will forever love the Mojo sideplot in this episode and as Kat said some of the jokes from it were a consistent part of my lexicon for a long time. I continue to think (more and more each week almost) that Mike Scully's era is way better than it gets credit for

It was Jim Rome who got attacked on the set of his show, he had been calling QB Jim Everett "Chris" (Chris Evert was a female tennis player) for a while, and Jim didn't appreciate it, the idea being that he was 'weak' and a 'coward/womanly' So he asked/demanded that Rome stop, and Rome doubled down. Everett proceeded to flip aside the table between them and gave Rome a strong shove to the ground. Rome immediately pulled the "HEY ITS JUST A PRANK BRO!" card.

If I recall correctly, the commentary discusses how the 1980s George Romero film "Monkey Shines" was a slight inspiration for Mojo. It's a fun watch with a lot of the greatness and not-so-great aspects of most Romero films with the added bonus that it shows a good deal of 1980s Pittsburgh. It's also two hours long for some reason.

Corn story! My husbands grandfather was a farmer in rural Illinois in the 60s and died in his corn crib, drowning in the corn. I feel like that has to be one of the worst ways to go!
Also, go bozo show! My dad had the Chicago bozo on his flights sometimes, I had lots of bozo merch as a kid :)
