What A Cartoon! - Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too

Winnie the Pooh has been such an overly-merchandised phenomenon for the past 80 years, it's easy to forget the character's Disney roots started with some excellent animated shorts. And, thanks to patron Alex Irish, on this week's What A Cartoon! we'll be taking an in-depth look at Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, Disney's third exploration of the Hundred Acre Wood. There's a lot to dig into with a cast of characters nearing their collective hundredth birthday, so of course we dive deep for a thorough exploration of the written source material, the early Pooh phenomenon that preceded the one we've been living in since the late '60s, and the talented staff and voice actors behind the classic shorts that would eventually make up The Many Adventures of Winnie Pooh. So say TTFN for your troubles and get ready for another great episode!

Quick correction! When Henry mentions a story where a little girl says "poo-poo" to a zoo animal, he says Matilda, but he means Madeline (I'm sure he just confused the two names). You can see it happening here at 2:38: https://archive.org/details/madeline_201510

I had completely forgotten about Welcome to Pooh Corner... pushed it to the furthest recesses of my mind... but it started struggling back out again after Henry mentioned it. I have very vague memories of liking it as a toddler, but rewatching a clip of it now I can see how it can be creepy. It kind of reminds me of the fake show the dad made on the movie Brigsby Bear

Thanks to Heritage Minutes, everyone who watched TV growing up in Canada knows about the origin of Winnie the Pooh. Though they really handwave the "Pooh" part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlA6oEs3C18 Also thanks, I've never watched a Pooh but I now despise the cursed Tigger and his danged song

Agreed, it was a cheap joke. Sorry about that! - Bob

Shame on you guys for taking a cheap shot at Charles Dutton whom has done amazing work rehabilitating incarcerated men to help prepare them for a life outside prison system and keep away from the element with outside counseling.

Please do the 2011 film. It’s the last time we’re likely to see that level of traditional animators in one film (well aside from like five minutes of Mary Poppins returns), it’s a delight that deserved to do better, why Disney released it against Harry Potter 7.2 is anyone’s guess. I also join in the love for the sketcher look of the films post 101 Dalmatians, while not as lush, are the films with the best character animation, I think it’s probably why I tend to keep my own art on the sketchier side and don’t go out of my way to clean up all of my sketch or construction lines. This was a delight

Does anyone else remember the commercial for classic Winnie the Pooh postage stamps (in the US) from the late ‘90s? There was a line akin to “ . . . named after a bear named Winnipeg and a swan named Pooh . . .” And I was always like “What? A swan? I have so many questions! Why is a bear named after a swan?” This confirmed that I didn’t imagine the swan thing! (But still have lots of questions.)

I went in to the Christopher Robin movie expecting it to be shite, but I actually had a pretty good time with it and the designs of the Pooh characters grew on me a lot from seeing them in the initial trailer (though the movie could have benefited from being less dreary). That being said, knowing the story of the real Christopher Robin makes the movie really uncomfortable for even existing and being marketed off of his name. It shouldn't surprise me given Disney's treatment of its own history in other stuff like Saving Mr. Banks, but yoinks none the less.

Im a nearly 30 yr old man and the winnie the pooh tape with the hefalumps was one of a half dozen movies i had to cycle through when i was young young (pre bootleg dvds and later the internet). I loved the wholesome vibe of pooh even then so its even more fucked up that during middle and high school i had winnke the pooh ruined for me via tigger. I went to school in east texas and one day a very clever group of my classmates decided to greet me in the morning with a group rendition of the "tigger" song with lyrics about being the only nword and so on. kids fucking suck. being an animation/cartoon fan i hadnt realized id been avoiding winnie the pooh for years, likely because of that ^. I feel better about it now though and i think im gonna plan a "pooh night" with my daughter soon. Thanks guys.

The guy who did the voice for Piglet also appeared on an episode of Golden Girls as a man that was irresistible to woman to the pure disbelief of the woman AND the guy who voices Winnie the Pooh did appear on the Twilight zone as a mystic TV repair man lmao

Also the Winnie the Pooh film from 2011 is AMAZING and I would actually highly recommend! It's probably the closest Disney gets to capturing the spirit of these shorts and unlike The Many Adventures, it has a narrative through line that has a nice little message/payoff at the end that feels less saccharine and more sweet. Would highly recommend!

I was confused and thought this was the short that introduced Tigger! Personally I would've recommended that short out of all of them, if only for the trippy Hephalumps and Woozles sequence which, yeah, was a ripoff of Pink Elephants from Dumbo. But was still pretty interesting.
