What A Cartoon! - Captain Simian And The Space Monkeys
Added 2019-06-17 04:00:00 +0000 UTC
This week we're deep in the 1990s and syndicated cartoons about monkeys that few remember! Chosen by premium patron Devin, Bob and Henry are entering the sci-fi/comedy world of Captain Simian, a toy-centric action show that's too clever for its own good at sending up Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Stanley Kubrick, and more! We cover the show's murky past and quiet future, Simian's connection to Tiny Toons, and detail just what the Bohbot Kids Network was! Listen now and peel out!
Damn the creator passed. He also wrote for mighty max, pinky and the brain

I have to mention Street Sharks, one of the more notable shows on the list. I have to imagine the main reason it was popular was the toy line of oversized rubbery figures that were bursting from the box. The cartoon itself almost felt like it was trying to parody TMNT, winking at the obvious "inspiration". A decade later I saw the rubber molds being repurposed for a whack a mole game at an arcade.

*Actually*, one is "ringing in" their *fifteenth* year on their fourteenth birthday, not their fourteenth year as claimed on this episode.

I watched CSATSM and all of BKN. Extreme Ghostbusters and the syndicated version of The Mask were my jam. It aired on a very local channel out of Philadelphia that had no network affiliation. It is now currently a Catholic channel.
I remember the ominous announcer and I get a good laugh out of it. That has stuck with me forever.

It's interesting that MegaBabies came up (ever so briefly) on this episode. I watched it enough as a kid on YTV (Canada represent) that it was lodged into my long-term memory, but not strongly enough that I could remember the name. A few years ago I was suddenly struck by the urge to figure out what the fuck it was, but could only remember the show's opening, and two key facts: the babies were different pastel colours, and that they all shit their diapers to such a comically impossible extent that they blasted themselves through the roof of their home and into the stratosphere. That amount of information was enough to make me sound INSANE to my friends, but make it somewhat difficult to figure out what show it was from. However, I luckily DID manage to find it, and the intro bit on YouTube, and showed it to said friends to prove I wasn't making it up. I can't speak to the quality of the show at all, but at times like those, the internet is not such a bad place

I watched this a handful of times as a kid and remembered it fondly. The biggest issue I had with it was an erratic airing schedule in my area so I often didn’t know when it was on.
The real reason I had to comment though was to tell you that Rice Krispie chicken is real and I had it on Father’s day. It’s always been a favorite of my dad’s side of the family. Basically you just coat boneless chicken breasts or tenders in butter then cover them in Rice Krispies and put them in a glass baking dish and bake at 400F for 25ish min (little more or less depending on thickness.) Season however you like, my family sticks with just salt, but I like some garlic powder in there too. It’s quite tasty and I’m sure it can be improved on (egg instead of butter and add a flower dredge maybe?). You should try it Hank I think you’d enjoy it.

All you need to know about Robocop: Alpha Commando is that it has a deliciously terrible theme song. https://youtu.be/Xa5LM8NrREA

Man, I feel like I kinda missed out on this. I don't think my hometown got the Bohbot Kids Network. Then again, I was more of a Road Rovers kid so I might've missed it regardless.

Ok now that I'm done and hearing who owns the rights all I can say is: can we get a hashtag trending on twitter so this series gets released on DVD? Or like even a kickstarter? You could bundle it with Mighty Max and some other show!

A shame this series never got its due. It's like Star Trek but with monkeys, and that's a potent combination. If it had aired on Kids WB, as did the similar toyetic animal actioner Road Rovers, more people would likely have remembered it.

HEEY so still listening but uh fair warning to anyone listening now and who's curious: DO NOT WATCH MEGABABIES IF YOU HAVE A LOW TOLERANCE FOR GROSS OUT HUMOR. That show is goddamn disgusting to watch and I would not wish it upon my worst enemies.

Extreme GB did have a two-part ep where all the old GB'ers came back to celebrate Egon's bday, but it turned into an adventure
