The summertime is the perfect excuse to stay inside as much as possible and listen to podcasts, at least that's Bob and Henry's opinion on the matter. And with the summer sun shining bright, the next month of podcast subjects are from settings as wild as suburban New Jersey and Tokyo-3! So let's take a look at the next five Mondays of What A Cartoon! episodes, in case any of y'all want to watch the shows early to prepare!
As always, you can hear these podcasts a week early if you're a Talking Simpsons Network subscriber, and that $5 will also let you listen to Talking Simpsons a week early, and hear dozens of exclusive podcasts and interviews! Also, don't forget July's big What A Cartoon! Movie premium podcast for $10 supporters! Stay subscribed to the Talking Simpsons Network for all that awesome stuff and more surprises!!
The Weekenders - "Cry/The Perfect Son" [Patreon Date: 7/1/19 - Free Feed Date 7/8/19]
Chosen be one of our premium patrons, we spend our weekend talking about the weekend warriors of Disney's One Saturday Morning! Dubbed "The Pokemon Killer" in the first press releases (there's slight truth to that), The Weekenders was briefly a big hit just before everything changed in 2001. We cover the interesting origins of the show and two of these early millennial adventures this week!
Disney is incredibly uncool about The Weekenders, as the only legal way to see it are expensive out-of-print DVDs. Wonder what happens if you were to Google "The Weekenders Cry Dailymotion"? Probably nothing...
Excel Saga - "Animation USA" [Patreon Date: 7/8/19 - Free Feed Date 7/15/19]
Another late '90s favorite chosen by a premium subscriber, we jump into the very silly world of Excel, Menchi, and all the other Il Palazzo employees. Japanese animation can sometimes be stereotyped as too self-serious, but Excel Saga is anything but, with obscenely inside jokes about anime, manga, and even American animation productions like this particular episode! Henry and Bob will dig deep into our anime reference bank to try and make sense of the 17th episode of Excel Saga!
Currently, Excel Saga is only available in the US on the Funimation streaming service, but you can watch it with just a free subscription and commercials here.
Clerks: The Animated Series - "A Dissertation on the American Justice System" [Patreon Date: 7/15/19 - Free Feed Date 7/22/19]
Bob and Henry are reformed fans of View Askew, and we were there day one for ABC's little broadcast animated adaptation of Kevin Smith's indie original. By all rights this show never should've happened, and yet it was way ahead of its time with pop culture references and random guest stars (less ahead of its time were the shows endless jokes about being gay). We'll be watching the fourth production episode (first to air), so get ready to watch along with us, snootch to the nootch!
Clerks: The Animated Series isn't on any streaming services, but you can buy the episode on Amazon or get the pretty good DVD set for about $10.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - "Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!" [Patreon Date: 7/22/19 - Free Feed Date 7/29/19]
Like a cruel angel, Evangelion has reentered our lives with a new HD release that's out on Netflix now, opening up the series to fans old and new. Is it worth all the praise? How has it aged? And what of the generation of animators influenced by the series that made such a massive impact? We'll be chatting about EVA as a whole and focusing on one of the best episodes of the first half, and we'll be inviting some really cool guests too!
Evangelion is now out on Netflix in just about every territory, so watch the 9th episode with us - though maybe watch the correct ending theme after you watch the Netflix version.
Megas XLR - "Test Drive" [Patreon Date: 7/29/19 - Free Feed Date 8/5/19]
And we close out July with a show that combines the mecha of Eva with the New Jersey dirtbags of Clerks to make the forgotten Cartoon Network series, Megas XLR. It's a fun parody of super robot cartoons from folks fresh of MTV cartoons. We'll be covering the first episode of the show, so learn all about its roots in our fifth podcast of the month!
Oddly, the only place you can legally buy Megas XLR digitally is on iTunes and Microsoft, no doubt left over from the early days of selling content online. Move fast before Cartoon Network delists them!
——————————————————————————————
What a fun month of cartoons, with even more cool stuff to come ahead of another podcast journey that Bob and Henry will be making to Los Angeles in July! And be sure to stay tuned for the next poll to vote for the What A Cartoon Movie! podcast subject!!!
