What A Cartoon! - The Ren & Stimpy Show "Hermit Ren"

We're returning to a series we've already done for the very first time on What A Cartoon!, but for a very good reason. Chris Reccardi, one of the most talented and influential forces in modern television animation, passed away in May of 2019. And while he never got a series of his own, we can look at one where he really got to shine: The Ren & Stimpy Show. Its Games Animation era might be maligned—mostly due to the now-thoroughly disgraced creator's own narrative—but thanks to artists like Chris, the heights it hit were always much higher than any other kids' cartoon of the era. This week, Sick Little Monkeys author and cartoon scholar Thad Komorowski joins us to discuss one of the weirdest and wildest Ren & Stimpy episodes that's wholly a product of the late Chris Reccardi: Hermit Ren.
Seeing as this was one of the episodes I had trouble coming back to way back when (hey, it was a bit much for a 9 year old), upon rewatching for this podcast I was pleasantly surprised at how well it juggles the horrific and the absurd; it's never too long before something like that shot of Ren's face on the bog man (completely forgot about that one so it caught me off guard, thank you for making it the title card) reels things back in.

The What a Cartoons this month have been really, extra good. Eagerly awaiting Thad’s podcast too.

I (re)watched a bunch of season 3/4 episodes of Ren & Stimpy over the past few days since this episode was coming, and the Games era is still so damn good. I love how fucking bizarre and often disgusting the show is - it's the kind of thing that I watch now and think "how was this a show ostensibly for children and how was it so popular?"

Monkey noises = peak comedy in every cartoon. for real.
I googled "bog man" and it looks like this is a direct reference to an actually mummified bog man, down to the rope, hat, and bag. fascinating.

It's from you guys I first learned about John K's big problems and now anytime I hear you guys or Matthew Jay talk about him, I always say to myself "Reset the clock" anytime I hear a new terrible fact for the first time. Then I usually just remind myself of all the good-hearted writers and artists out there both in the past and currently
