And while it's mostly forgotten today, this spiritual predecessor to similarly absurdist series like Pop Team Epic still exists as a wholly unique expression of a very enigmatic director. This week, thanks to the generous patronage of Phil Jacobi, What A Cartoon! checks out one of Excel Saga's most popular episodes, one that lampoons both American and Japanese interpretations of the medium: Animation USA.

I was honestly shocked with how well this episode held up! I was a huge fan of Excel Saga back in college and binged the series repeatedly (okay, binged DVDs 1, 2, and 6 repeatedly). I read every single one of those Pop-Up Menchis, so thank you Richard for your diligence! A college roommate used to accuse me of hitting forward on the text too fast for her to read when we'd play RPGs as a group. Once, she walked in on me watching Excel Saga, subtitled, as Pop-Up Menchis filled the screen, and said, "Oh THIS is why you learned to read so fast!"
