What A Cartoon! - The Angry Beavers "Up All Night/Dag For Night"

This week we kick some spoot with Norb and Dag in the classic Nicktoon, The Angry Beavers. We take you through the series' surprisingly long development, the career of creator Mitch Schauer, the show's rejected final episode, and so much more before diving into the shorts "Up All Night" and "Dag For Night." So put on some comical boxers and listen along to find out if these beavers are angry, or just passive-aggressive!

Something else I'd like to point out that I don't think you guys went over is that the end credits features some fun shout outs from the cast and crew of the show, for example I'm watching the episodes Lumberjacks delight & Zooing Time and here are some funny credits that stand out to me: Script Supervisor Micah "The new Godzilla film stinks" Wright Post production director Heather "This phone is sticky!" Adams For Nicktoons executive producer Mary Harrington, Mary is currently appearing in "Notice my shoes or I'll Whop you!" Senior Producer Michael "I'm in movies now. So, there!" lessa And the credits are different for every episode, so if you're one of the lucky ones like me who got it on DVD, it adds some new jokes to watch for.

I'm so happy you all covered this one because I really connected to the show having an older brother. You both honed it on what makes the show great specifically thanks to Richard Horvitz and Nick Bakay's performances and interplay. From Daggett's shouting and nonsense words like "Spoot" to Norbert's constant inflections and idiosyncratic dialogue it just grabbed on to me in a personal way like when siblings create in jokes or languages to joke with one another. I'm hoping you all cover more of the lesser known Nicktoons!

I only watched the first few episodes of Angry Beavers before I suddenly got too old for Nickelodeon.

I'm amazed you guys did the one Angry Beavers episode I've ever see! Up All Night was a major touchstone for a friend and I, despite never watching the show with regularity after seeing just this one episode. Our young moron-brains were amazed at the idea of becoming delirious simply by staying up too late. Years later, motivated by memories of this episode, he and I left a friend's sleep-over in the middle of the night and went to a 24-hour gas station. Whacked out on nothing but Mountain Dew Code Red and fatigue, we giggled at crinkling candy wrappers and the mere **idea** of one day, potentially, being high on actual drugs. We bought armfuls of Pop-tarts, weirded out the miserable cashier, and went back to the sleep-over to play more N64. Truly, we were living in the future, as the Angry Beavers predicted.

If you're looking for some modern cartoons with plenty of comedic violence the new Mickey Mouse shorts are loaded with that stuff. Often Mickey is the victim, but other characters get abused too including poor Pluto. Henry's pronunciation of Nick Bakay's name is the correct one. He used to have a guest spot on ESPN's Sportscenter back in the early 2000s in which he always said his own name. I saw a lot of those segments while in college. I never could get into Angry Beavers. I think it had to do with the name of the show which gave me certain expectations of the show that it didn't really meet. I watched a lot of it, but mostly because it was on. This was also the era when I was moving away from NickToons and even more towards video games or just wasting away hours upon hours of my time on the internet.

I never watched this show as a kid but I feel like I would have loved it if I had, cause I certainly enjoyed watching it for this. That being said, wish I thought to check Archive.org because finding Dag For Night especially was a pain in the ass, even just being in Canada.

As a younger listener who was definitely the right age for this when it came out, Angry Beavers was my favorite Nicktoon for the longest time (until I caught Rocko reruns on the Nicktoons Network some years later). I found it unique compared to other cartoons airing due to the constant overlapping of character dialogue, and the fact that I was infatuated with Richard Horvitz’s voice. Especially his famous “Horvitz honk” (which we can hear a bit of in the first episode after Daggett is electrocuted). I would often try to imitate that noise he makes in school, much to the chagrin of my teachers. The last bit that appealed to me about the show were the episode endings, as they often featured characters either in peril, trapped somewhere with no way out, or facing existential crisis. Funnily enough, there are two other shows I loved that often had similar endings, Invader Zim and The Grim Adventures Of Billy and Mandy, both of which also featured Horvitz prominently.

I absolutely love this show! It means a lot to me simply for the fact, as you guys mentioned the creator is from Oklahoma, if you've binged the series (like I did when it was released on DVD) you'll notice throughout the series they'll reference a town called Pawhuska, town is actually several miles east of where I grew up in Oklahoma and it's VERY small town Oklahoma with a history. This is why angry beavers became more special to me after I watched the show through.

Norbert's girlfriend is named Treeflower! I *loved* The Angry Beavers as a kid (and now tbh) and I'm so glad this was chosen!

I just realized, I totally forgot to ask you guys to please include that Beach a Gogo song during the break, but you somehow thought to do it anyway, that's awesome! Anyway, great episode as always. I'm very happy with my choices throughout this year and I'm sure my future choices will be enjoyable too.
