What A Cartoon! - The September 2019 Schedule

We made it through the long podcast days of summer and have arrived in September with even more old cartoon goodness! This month will have five awesome episodes that run the gamut of cult hits, anime classics, vintage Nicktoons, and Comedy Central oldies! Plus, this month will see not one, but TWO POLLS, as we ask you lovely patrons to help us choose a new What A Cartoon Movie! subject AND our fall 2019 miniseries of exclusive podcasts!!

And if you're not yet a subscriber, signing up at the $5 level to the Talking Simpsons Network will get you each of these episodes a week ahead of time and ad-free, along with our past exclusive miniseries (and a chance to vote on the next one) and dozens and dozens of bonus podcasts on top of that! And don't forget at the $10 level you get all that PLUS an exclusive monthly What A Cartoon Movie! podcast!!!!

Now, without further ado, here's what's on the schedule for September:

The Angry Beavers - "Up All Night/Dag For Night" [Patreon Date: 9/2/19 - Free Feed Date 9/9/19]

We're starting off the month with another classic '90s Nicktoon, The Angry Beavers! Started as an answer to the cutesy cartoons of the '80s, Mitch Schauer created a series about a couple of aquatic mammals constantly getting into passive-aggressive hijinks while also watching some of the worst B-movie Sci-Fi ancient cable TV had to offer. We dig into the show's interesting history and the drama of its rejected last episode in this special podcast.

The Angry Beavers is currently available to stream on VRV, and also available to purchase physically and digitally on numerous platforms.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - "Fullmetal Alchemist" [Patreon Date: 9/9/19 - Free Feed Date 9/16/19]

It's time for us to check out arguably the most popular anime of the '00s, Fullmetal Alchemist, specifically the remake/retelling Brotherhood! We'll dig into how the manga got its start, how the first anime series handled the incomplete story, and how Brotherhood wrapped up the loose ends while setting up the series in fun new ways with a special original first episode that we'll be breaking down together!

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is conveniently streaming on multiple platforms in the US, including Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.

Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist - "Bully" [Patreon Date: 9/16/19 - Free Feed Date 9/23/19]

We've covered Squigglevision before but now it's time to explore where it all began with Jonathan Katz's lightly animated series! Comedy Central's first animated series, it found a new way to package stand-up comedy as a conversation between a comedian patient and the very subdued jokes of Dr. Katz. We'll be chatting about that and how we were introduced to the brilliance of H. Jon Benjamin and Laura Silverman through this show's early years as we watch the first season hit, Bully!

Dr. Katz isn't officially streaming anywhere in the US right now, but the episode is on YouTube currently, or you could buy the official season 1 DVD.

Cybersix - "Mysterious Shadow" [Patreon Date: 9/23/19 - Free Feed Date 9/30/19]

This little known but gorgeous show is turning 20 this month, so we're going to celebrate Cybersix with a brand new podcast! What happens when TMS, some of the best animators in Japan, team up with a Vancouver-based animation production house to adapt an Argentina adult comic into a kids cartoon? A strange mix of gorgeous animation, '90s anime dub actors, and Image Comics-inspired edgelords in this gender-bending adventure! We'll be watching the first episode, so get your gigantic cape ready!

Cybersix is available as a complete series on DVD, or in the US you can watch the first episode on YouTube.

Nadia: Secret of Blue Water - "Marie's Island" [Patreon Date: 9/30/19 - Free Feed Date 10/7/19]

Before Hideaki Anno directed Neon Genesis Evangelion, his first TV series is nothing to sneeze at either. Based on 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and influenced by a concept from Hayao Miyazaki, Anno and his team at Gainax created this deceptively simple adventure series about a mysterious girl and her friend the inventor! We'll be watching the fifth episode of the series because that's when it gets really interesting, so come along with us to discover the secret of Blue Water!

Nadia is streaming on HiDive and VRV right now, and you can also pick up the gorgeous Blu-ray collection that came out just last year.

A fantastic month of podcasts will be leading us into the fall, so strap in and get ready to watch along! Don't forget, you get episodes a week early if you're a $5+ Patron, and coming very soon you'll get to vote on the What A Cartoon Movie for $10+ patrons!!

Which Canadian do we have to blame for the inclusion of CyberSix?

I look forward to the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood episode to hear which series you all prefer. Brotherhood is the more complete experience, but gets bogged down by way too many side characters over time and turns into a straightforward battle show for the last twenty episodes. The original series is a mess but I can’t help but prefer it’s tighter focus and bizarre non-ending.

Oh man, I'm excited for all of these. I honestly thought it'd be forever until Cybersix got covered, but thankfully not!

Angry Beavers is one of those shows you’re glad got taped over by your dad. Also there seems to be a million episodes that no one ever watched.

Thad Komorowski

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers CyberSix exists.

Cool beans

Hope the Angry Beavers episode includes discussion of the unproduced final episode

Alex Irish

Holy shit, CyberSix. It's wedged pretty firmly into my personal category of 'best show nobody watched' so thank you for bringing it up
