What A Cartoon! - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood "Fullmetal Alchemist"

Thanks to the generous donations of patron and special guest David Whittington, this week we're exploring a very popular remake of perhaps the most popular anime of the modern era: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood! While the 2003 adaptation did a great job of taking the story in an original direction, Brotherhood emerged a mere five years later, just as the original manga was coming to an end—meaning it's the most direct adaptation you're ever going to get. Listen in as we explain how this seemingly redundant series acts as a great work on its own, as well as an excellent companion piece to the original series, and also why it's much cheaper to buy a Netflix subscription over 27 volumes of manga.
Other than Cowboy Beebop and Evangelion, this is one of the animes I most recognized the name of outside of this podcast, and similarly, dipping my toes in for this has made me want to watch more of it

I loved the 2003 series too and Conqueror of Shamballa. I’ve never been able to get into Brotherhood before, but after watching episode 1 for this podcast I wound up watching the first 5. I think I’ll stick with it this time; probably just needed enough time to pass from the original series. I really liked the real world alternate history ending of the original where the brothers end up fighting actual nazis and things lead to the Beer Hall Putsch. It will be interesting to see how the more manga faithful series goes.

I loved the 2003 series and ultimately think Brotherhood is better, but I was so put off by this episode initially that I didn't get around to watching the full series until nearly five years later. It reveals things too early and in a less exciting and impactful way than the canon material, and creates several redundancies in the process. In 2009 this episode and the speedy pacing of the repeated material from the 2003 show were a necessary evil, as you could assume most people were familiar with the series already, but for anyone who's gotten into anime within the last decade, those aspects frustratingly prevent if from being a perfect adaptation. Whenever I recommend this series, I tell people to just start at episode 2.

I didn't watch brotherhood until last year when I was finally pressured into it.
I just couldn't get past the first few episodes. I was like how is this better than the 2003 series? It feels so rushed.
But then someone told me just get through those and so I did and it was good.
But you know what? I think i still prefer the 2003 series.
But yeah it's a fine series

Definitely the music was WAY better in the 2003 series. But I appreciate both shows in their own ways.

This is literally the only anime series I've ever watched - I binged it 6 months ago as part of a "I'll watch this show if you watch that show" deal with a friend and absolutely loved it.

Re Bradley: i think King is his first name and Fuhrer is his title. At least that's my understanding of it.

Similar to Bob I never got into brotherhood because I really liked the first series, so when the new one came out I felt like "god again? I'm not going on this ride a second time so soon". On top of that I heard from many people it was "bad" probably because it was much slower paced then the first series. I should give this one another shot at some point since I seem to have judged it unfairly!
