What A Cartoon! - Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist "Bully"

Before cable television grew up in the late '90s by becoming a different kind of must-see TV, networks needed lots of content—and cheap. Enter Dr. Katz, a barely (but endearingly) animated show that mostly existed as a unique way to package existing stand-up routines. Despite its budget-friendly approach, Katz became a cult hit not just for showcasing the best material of up-and-coming comics, but also for the genuinely endearing relationship between Katz and his adorable failson, Ben. On this week's What A Cartoon!, we explore an early episode that navigates its way into some surprisingly touching moments: season one's "Bully."

Unfortunately my family didn’t get Comedy Central in the ‘90s so I missed out on this show. :( Listening to you guys talk about it has motivated me to finally start watching episodes on YouTube.

I've never heard it before but this show is so funny. Def Home Movies vibes.

I loved this show, thanks for mentioning that its on YouTube. Dr. Katz was a nice intro for me to a lot of comics, I always forget how much I enjoy Jim Gaffigan.

So Bob and I both had a thing for animated red-head receptionists with a sarcastic edge while we were growing up, huh (the other one being Janine)? Interesting... I absolutely LOVE this show. The format is great and really could run forever. It looks like nothing else on TV and my only wish would be that the episodes were longer so we could spend more time with the comedians. I used to tape this show and give it to friends at school to try and get them into it but the animation style really seemed to put them off. It's one of the most gentle and relaxed shows out there and I think it's still kinda ahead of its time, even today. Finally, while I re-watched the series on youtube, I never found the live shows until tonight. This one featuring Paul F. Tompkins is fantastic: https://youtu.be/8tePZxU2xVA Anyway, I hear the music starting to play so I'll just say thanks again for a great episode. ^_^

I don't care about the level of talent a person has if they sexually harass others. Thanks for the rude comment, Random Stranger.

Louis CK has more talent in his fingernail clippings than you've got in your whole family tree.

First of all, I'm glad you guys chose an episode that didn't contain Louis CK, because fuck that guy. In any case, I had heard lots of clips from Dr. Katz before but never watched (or mainly listened to, I guess) an entire episode before and this was super fun. Given that it doesn't require a lot of attention, I do think I'll plow though these episodes while playing games sometime as Hank mentioned on the podcast. Thanks for another great episode of WAC!

I don’t know why but this episode about not giving up stuffed animals possibly related to being forced into adulthood, it speaks to me. Anyway I better to bed where I am surrounded by all the plushies I have and get to work tomorrow even though I would rather sit around and play Three Houses all day. Luckily I’m not a desperate loser.. I hope XD

Thanks for explaining SquiggleVision and the era the show was produced in, because it feels like a put-on. But, ok, it's the mid-90's, anything computer generated, even if it looks like MS paint, has a freshness to it. I'm looking at a few youtube clips* for "Boiling Line" effect but those are from hand-retracing, and for some reason they're easier on the eyes. I'm guessing it's the increased frames for Cartoon Network animation instead of "Nothing but time to fill" Comedy Central animation. * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq5VnJ2c-eY

Great episode, and I can't agree enough about the current state of stand-up comedy. The idea that comedy needs to "speak truth to power" has done so much damage to the art of stand-up, and it rings especially hollow in the wake of guys like Shane Gillis defending incredibly hack racism as "subversive" and "boundary pushing". There is a ton of genuinely good stand-up comedy these days, so it's been especially disheartening that lately its mostly been dominated by old men who cant handle criticism.
