Oh and Bob, don't listen to Henry - go and see HEAVY METAL. Based on the namesake sci-fi magazine which was a welcome alternative to mainstream superhero comics, the film itself features work by acclaimed artists Moebius, Bernie Wrightson, Richard Corben, Mike Ploog, and others; writing by Dan (Alien) O'Bannon, Daniel (Stripes) Goldberg; and features voice work by many SCTV alumni as John Candy, Joe Flaherty, & Eugene Levy, as well as Richard Romanus, Harold Ramis, & John Vernon. And setting the South Park parody aside, the nudity is not the main feature of the film. Say what you like about "fan service" discussed on the many What A Cartoon anime episodes but HEAVY METAL at least shows adult women in adult situations. A far cry from the cringe-worthy numerous down blouse & up-skirt panty shots of underage girls in various anime series. And while people may drool endlessly about Evangelion (for example) in which a third of every episode consists of dialogue recited over stills, you should enjoy the full animation (and/or rotoscoping depending on the segment) of HEAVY METAL which in 1981 was a breath of fresh air from the Disney dreck features at the time. An animated R-Rated sci-fi adventure with no cute anthropomorphic talking animals?! It stood out like a beacon to animation fans! Lastly, I happened to have dinner at a film opening for the artist documentary DISFARMER which was directed by Martin Lavut who played Ard in the DEN segment. I couldn't resist asking him about HEAVY METAL & he told me about how funny John Candy was in person while they recorded their dialogue. So bring it up on Netflix, open a six pack or smoke a bowl and enjoy!

I can't believe no one mentioned the obvious David Bowie reference - when the Neutral Leader says "Tell my wife I said hello" that's a riff on the the line from Space Oddity, when the doomed Major Tom says, "Tell my wife I love her very much." :)
