What A Cartoon! - Harley Quinn "'Til Death Do Us Part"

Our top-level patron David is back once more, and he asked us to check out DC Universe's breakout toon, Harley Quinn! This take on the animated character borrows from some of her best comics to craft a world of loser villains and white-faced fuckboys, all as Harley Quinn finds her independence. We cover the show's creation and how surprisingly funny the violent comedy is, so grab your favorite baseball bat and listen along...

I've never been a fan of supporting characters gaining the spotlight. Harley like every appearance by Paul Lynde always shined brilliantly to me. That said, it's difficult to get into this show for two reasons - 1) while I understand the need to provide a plot to get Harley out of the abusive relationship with Joker, why would she continue a life of crime? Like wondering why Batman continued fighting crime when he found Joe Chill, the murderer of his parents, Harley whole reason for being was to curry the favor of the Joker. Without that she needs a better reason to remain a criminal other than to show up her old boyfriend which keeps that obsession intact. I wish she had a better goal. And 2) the camp tone does not sit well with me. "DC's Venture Bros" is a perfect description but while VB mocks the genre with new characters, this show is too on the nose. I see no difference between this and the self parody of Legend/Roast of the SuperHeroes with Adam West. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXiQ9LliPvQ I saw a later episode when Robin (I'm assuming Damian Wayne) wanted Harley as his arch-enemy. At the end he was exposed on national TV. So now Robin is a villain & Harley is a hero? Maybe if it was written funnier, it would work but it just fell flat. I must say I enjoyed this WAC commentary/history better than the Harley show itself. :)

Henry has ranted about DC Universe not being available for consoles at least twice (this episode and also during Brave and the Bold episode). In the opening of one of season 2's episodes it shows someone using the DCU app on an Xbox. I am convinced DC/WB is just actively trolling Henry.

Yeah I haven't even seen the movie and even I thought "hey, don't judge, you haven't seen it!"

I should have kept in mind that it was probably months since you all recorded this but there was reoccurring groan at The Croods from the hosts/guest. I had just seen the movie so I was like "Hey wait, that's a good movie why are they saying it's bad?"

SilkiePJ

I've also heard nothing but good things about the Croods. Lots of people who went in expecting it to be dumb as hell, but came out impressed.

nina matsumoto

That was inexplicable

I will not take this slander against The Croods! It's a surprisingly good and heartfelt Dreamworks movie with incredible settings and designs. Most of the straight-to-Netflix adaptations have been bad except for Captain Underpants. However Chris Sanders has recently made the error of jumping to live action movies doing that bizarre Call of the Wild movie featuring Harrison Ford and a giant dog.

Oh and I just watched the second episode where Bane incorrectly answers who has won the most games at Gotham Stadium. The correct answer was the Steelers, the home team of Heinz Field where they filmed The Dark Knight Rises. I was in the background of that scene. They were shooting summer for winter and I was in a pea coat sweating to death. Worth it though.

Every time I heard Alan Tudyk’s Joker I swore I have heard that voice before and after skimming his IMDB page I figured it out. It’s the same voice he uses on Star Vs the Forces of Evil as the first season’s antagonist Ludo. He’s got a similar vibe too, obsessive, and kind of looserey. Totally worth an episode of WaC if you’re up for it.

If you’re interested, TV Tropes made a page for examples of characters becoming canon in the official universe: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CanonImmigrant

Like most, it would seem, I had a negative perception of this show when I first heard about it because most of the modern Harley material seems to either be one of two things: glorifying a toxic relationship with Joker, or clown porn character. I then randomly caught an episode on SyFy, a channel I often forget exists, and was pretty entertained with my main take-away being "Why didn't anyone tell me this was just DC Venture Bros?!" I, unfortunately, caught on too late as apparently SyFy only had the broadcast rights to the first season for the month of May so I ended up with half the season on my DVR that I'll probably just watch eventually. If I like it enough, I suppose I could binge it with that free week of DC Universe because I have no desire to pay for more streaming options presently. And I think the character you're thinking of from Batman Forever (which turns 25 today, if Twitter can be trusted) is Dr. Chase Meridian.

The DC universe app definitely is on Xbox One, not on PS4 unfortunately.

As far as I can tell, WB has no intentions of rolling up all their streaming services into Max in the near future...which is a shame...rather pay for 1 than 3.

Frank Grimes

I actually double checked after i posted this and it is in fact NOT on the PS4. “MY mistake”.

Boyd Adkins IV

Oops, I do see it on Xbone, but I just searched on PS4 App Store and can’t find it there. Are you sure it’s on PS4?

Henry said the DC Universe App isn’t on consoles but it’s on both PS4 and Xbox One

Powerless is probably most notable for having Adam West’s last on-screen performance. The last episode of the season “Win, Luthor, Draw” had West as Chairman Dean West. The show had already been canceled without airing the last 3 episodes, but after West’s death NBC posted the episode on their YouTube channel for a limited time as a tribute of sorts. It was a pretty fun show; hopefully it will show up on HBOMax or Peacock or something. The one way this show had never been sold to me was as a Powerless reunion Ron Funches even plays a talking shark in Harley Quinn and was an Atlantean on Powerless.
