Talking Mission Hill - Kevin Finds Love (or Hot for Weirdie)

Mission Hill enters its final stretch with an episode that continues Kevin's Yale admissions saga! Previously, we've seen him try to break the SATs to get into the Ivy League, but this time, he's using all of his powers of seduction. And through this plot, we meet one of Mission Hill's most unique one-off characters (shockingly not voiced by Tress MacNeille!): an extremely well-observed nerd whose war criminal father might be Kevin's ticket to Yale. So put down those dog-eared copies of the Gormenghast saga and get ready for another great podcast!

As a bi-guy who thought he was straight as a (horny) teenager, I'd be remiss to not mention that Jennifer Jason Leigh ALSO has a nude scene in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," as lead up to a sex scene. IIRC her plotline afterward involves her learning she was pregnant because they didn't do safe sex, the guy is an jerk about it, and she has an abortion. In any case, she's also the co-lead alongside Jude Law in David Cronenberg's 1999 exploration of gaming/VR "eXistenZ," which is pretty good if you haven't seen it. I concur that she's a really good voice actor in this episode, and it's unfortunate she didn't do a whole lot more. -- And as Henry mentioned, she's one of like 3 women in "Hateful Eight," but the only one who's really around for any amount of time, and she's an absolute garbage human in it, so it's not great representation in terms of having who is essentially the only woman be a reprehensible piece of shit.

When they covered Jennifer Jason Leigh and Henry said "I'm surprised she doesn't do more voice work" I was really hoping they would remember the incredible Anomalisa the stop motion movie where she is one of the only three voices in the cast.

Weirdy kicks ass and is one of the best "weird nerdy girl"s I've seen depicted in media. She's a nerd but is also fearless and likes breaking rules. She's alone but because she prefers to be, and is totally comfortable in her solitude. A lesser show would have had her show some mild signs of self-consciousness (some vulnerability) or done a dreaded "wow she's pretty when she lets down her hair/takes off her glasses!!" moment, but she stays true to herself the whole way through and Kevin falls for her purely based on personality (and yes, he does stare at her butt, but it's not uncommon to start finding someone physically attractive after falling for their personality even if you weren't attracted before). She's a breath of fresh air and makes this one of my fav episodes.

Screw Weirdy, I would SO be Kevin's girlfriend lol...too bad I'm not his age, but Kev would totally be my sweet babboo XD

re: the neighbors helping with the fake club - I'd always read it as that they were just having fun. They all seem to have fun senses of humour, and getting to be goofy with Andy and the crew would be something that they'd no doubt want to do.

she's so scary

Related to the history segment upfront, Nickelodeon has done the Jimmy Neutron trick twice after. First was with 2006’s Barnyard, which again was a movie with a show the following year, also made by O Entertainment, and the second with Wonder Park. That movie, blighted by its ousted director Dylan Brown who was a serial sexual harasser, came and went with unfavorable reception, and was supposed to have a TV series with “brand new Wonder Park adventures” but that show seems to have been scrapped. With the failure of the movie, it’s not surprising Nick ultimately swept it under the rug, but the sole trailer for the show exists forever on the Wonder Park home video release. They never uploaded it on YouTube either, it only exists online as off-camera footage. That’s gotta be one of Nick’s biggest failures. https://youtu.be/ZCyblMYxrXk

Cue the only American Gormenghast fan howling that it was made into a forgettable BBC miniseries (it wasn’t a patch on the books).

is Dave Thomas doing an ed wynn or emo philips? sounds like a mix of both

A pretty good Jennifer Jason Leigh show is Netflix's Atypical...and from the trailers, the postponed Woman in the Window looks like a good role.

I did not get that until you typed it out, so... that's egg on my face.

Gotta note he called her "J.K. TERFling" in this podcast recorded 6 weeks ago so he was calling her out for being awful BEFORE her beliefs made the news!

nina matsumoto

Yeah I figured, no problem

ShyRanger

We probably recorded this six weeks ago

"It hasn't been ruined like LOTR or Harry Potter, by ruined I mean made popular." Oh Bob, Harry Potter has been ruined in plenty of ways aside from being popularity,.

The DVD’s omission of Judas Priest is one of the greatest tragedies ever befallen home media. Broken laws of decency indeed.
