Talking Simpsons - Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder With Will Sloan

For this story of bowling and fatherhood, we welcome back Will Sloan, the cohost of podcasts The Important Cinema Club and Michael And Us! Homer suffers from 15 minutes of perfect game fame, has altercations with Opie himself, and he decides to finally spend time with Maggie! All that plus unbelievably strong babies in this week's podcast!

I wonder if the bowling thing has largely been dropped from Homer's personality simply because it was something Fred Flintstone was known for? The less ways The Simpsons can be compared to that show the better.

Oh man, I laughed harder than I have in a long time at the foley of Lenny's pills hitting the trash can. That might be my favorite joke in the whole episode because 1. its actually an accurate usage of the term "psychotic" and 2. the joke is dark as all fuck. This is a good mental illness learning moment, what homer describes could qualify as a psychotic break. Many people use psychotic and sociopathic interchangeably, but the two terms are really different. A psychosis generally speaking is simply a break from reality, and can manifest in so many ways. The dark aspect of this joke is that if Lenny is taking those pills, he is likely schizophrenic or has a major mood disorder or personality disorder, and one of the biggest challenges in those disorders is people who stop taking their medication, for a variety of reasons. Lenny's accident may have been a false alarm at the start of the episode, but someone really needs to stop by his dilapidated shack and do a wellness check. All that said, I nearly fell over in the shower when I heard "if thats psychotic, then why am I taking these?!" punctuated by that perfect foley. As a lifelong sufferer of different mental illnesses and as someone who used to be on a lot of medication, this reference is usually on my short list for Simpsons quotes.
