What A Cartoon! - TaleSpin "Vowel Play"

This week, we're covering the cartoon that kicked off The Disney Afternoon programming block! Before Disney's TV efforts switched over to adapting feature films in the mid-90s, TaleSpin stood as one of their most interesting animated series to date, with its odd mix of Cheers, Casablanca, and Indiana Jones... and starring characters from The Jungle Book? Despite how odd it sounds on paper, TaleSpin adds up to a great adventure series, and one that kicked off a beloved block of Disney bliss for kids of the '90s. Listen in as we rediscover what makes this classic cartoon soar!
I hate to be this guy, and maybe you guys have already talked about this at some point BUT, Iβm always surprised people donβt talk about how Jim Cummings is a right wing nutso. I love his work in everything, especially Ok K.O., but itβs hard to get it out of my head that he is not only a hardcore MAGA bro, but also an alleged sexual assaulter. It seems like those accusations got swept under the rug right around the Star Wars land was opened in Disneyland where he is featured heavily.... funny timing. Love you guys, love this episode, just want to hear your thoughts

Much like Bob and Henry, I tolerated TaleSpin so long as there wasn't something else on. Though I must have seen the entire show through a couple of times and even had a clear recollection of the final episode in spite of its limited airings. That all said I can't think about TaleSpin nowadays without the Pickle and Peanut character 90s Adventure Bear popping into my head. The parodic Ninties gets pretty dark, especially for a show under the Disney banner.

The second I heard the name Heimlich I knew there was going to be a Heimlich Maneuver joke.

I think my love of TaleSpin as a kid is what made me really like the Crimson Skies game on X-Box. The retro future aesthetic, (I've sometimes heard it referred to as Diesel Punk,) has always been a favorite of mine and watching this episode just makes me upset that there hasn't been any Crimson Skies sequel, or even remake.

Great episode. I remember watching this show in reruns a lot during Disney afternoon. I remember being so frustrated that they never showed the pandala episode again because it was so epic and had great battle scenes. There was a time over a period of months when I was like, come on, it must be coming on soon but it never did. Not for a single moment did I consider why it might be pulled and itβs one of those moments I wish I had a media aware parent who could explain how it might have been offensive because to me they were just mean pandas.

Having little to no prior experience with Talespin, unlike Dark Wing Duck and Duck Tales, I didn't know what to expect going into this. I was certainly surprised about this episode's focus on imparting the importance of spelling onto children, which at points borders on being too much of a PSA, but the show's really interesting period setting and writerly puns and jokes about words really make up for it (as does the great animation).

On top of Disney+ removing two of the more problematic episodes, it seems the order differs from airing so I assume it's because it follows production order but my quick search doesn't seem to prove that 100%. If that's the case, I'm all for that, but if not I'm confused as to why Wikipedia lists this as episode 12 but other places have it at 16, and yet it's 8 on the official streaming service.

TaleSpin was always the lesser show in the Disney Afternoon block for me. I don't know that I really watched it much though as I think it ran opposite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in my market. I'd watch DuckTales and Rescue Rangers then change the channel for some turtles. The worse theme song and the video games just reinforced my thinking as the NES TaleSpin was definitely the lesser game when compared with its block-mates. TaleSpin did receive a seldom referenced Genesis game, so I guess it had that going for it over DuckTales and Rescue Rangers. It's about as generic a platformer as one can get and I do not recommend it. I actually think I prefer the NES game to it.

If you want an example of how fucked up spelling is in English: in Flemish it is very common to put H before O when O has to say its own name. Flemish spelling was very popular in England around the 16-17 hundreds but it was such a flash in the pan that only ONE WORD IN ENGLISH MAINTAINS THIS RULE TO THIS DAY And that's "Ghost". Which coincidentally means Ghost is a reflection of a rule no longer used in English thus making the spelling of Ghost A GHOST. Try to wrap your brain around that one.

Great episode on one of my favorite Disney Afternoon shows and, as someone who runs in furry circles, I can confirm "shirtless Baloo" is responsible for a lot of gay furry awakenings.
