Talking Simpsons - Treehouse of Horror XII With Eric Szyszka

Season 13 has begun, so it's a perfect time to welcome back returning pal Eric Szyszka from the We Hate Movies podcast onto the podcast! Initially, we reflect on the first ep of Simpsons to air after 9/11, and then we chat about the episode itself. Part one is about a bunch of weird curses, followed by the voice of James Bond lusting after Marge, then ending with the oddity of a Harry Potter parody made before the first film adaptation. Protect your vulnerable shinbones as you listen to this week's podcast!

I decided to make the first post 9/11 episode covered my time to finally join the Patreon after sucking up these guys' content for free for about two years, like a leech. Since I was 21 when 9/11 happened (though safely in Madison, WIsconsin at the time), the images from it are still constantly in the back of my head all the time. I do remember watching this episode when it aired though by this point I was starting to turn into a nohomersclub forum lurking post-Golden Era hater.

I have a shockingly relevant story about garbage disposals, since they came up. I've only ever lived in one place with a sink disposal and I was always terrified of dropping something down and destroying it. One day it completely stopped and I had to dismantle it to figure out what was going on. It was disgusting and awkward and what I finally pried out of the blades....was my partner's enamel pin of Marge as a witch from season 9. It was so absurd and I will forever associate treehouse eps with it

The gibberish-spouting leprechaun was particularly popular among the twelve-year-olds at the time this first aired, that's for sure. While I remembered the first two segments of this Treehouse just fine, for whatever reason I forgot that the Harry Potter parody was in this one. Maybe it was because I missed that part the first time I saw it? It's also possible that I thought that there was no way they did an extended Harry Potter riff before the movie came out—usually, their Treehouse parodies are a few years behind. I mean, the last time I saw a new Treehouse of Horror on TV, they were doing a Coraline parody close to ten years after that movie came out. Kudos to them for being ahead of the curve that time, although it probably led to the segment having so many non-specific jokes.

What a relief!

https://popicon.life/tour-de-trix-trix-rabbit-finally-got-eat-cereal/ not a false memory.

My mind was blown so much by all of the cereal revelations in this episode. Trix became fruit-shaped in the EARLY '90s?! Did I ever even eat the spherical Trix?! Probably not. Kix are just naked Trix?! WHAT. I don't even know what's real anymore. DID I actually send in a coupon from the back of the box voting for the Rabbit to get to eat the Trix or is that a false memory too?

I was in a Treehouse mood last October and I watched a few episodes I hadn’t seen yet. The Simpsons did another bit about a house AI developing an infatuation with a family member. In this case it’s an AI version of Marge crushing on Homer. They couldn’t get Emily Blunt or something? Also we have those garbage disposals in Canada but we call them “garburators” which confuses my American friends to no end.

I thought the second short was based more on the Disney TV movie, smart house with Katey Segal. While they did have those smart home "horror" flicks before it, it seems like it would riff on smart house because that came out in 99, and was fairly popular.

I had no idea bout the wizard poop post-publication rationalization of weak plotting for the second book, or whatever reason. Man, that's just gross and stupid.

Eternals Stan here, give it a re-watch sometime, trust me it plays better knowing where it goes (but it’s also okay not to like a movie 😅)
