Talking Simpsons - Half Decent Proposal With Jason Sheridan
Added 2022-08-10 04:01:01 +0000 UTC
As one of Simpsons season 2 characters returns, we also happily welcome back Podcast: The Ride's Jason Sheridan! As Homer's snoring is out of control, this brings Artie Ziff back into Marge's life for an extended parody of Indecent Proposal. And just as we're done talking about that, they parody several films from the '70s leading to a fiery finale, so check all that out on your way to Mount Carlmore on this week's podcast!

Yeah it's not like "we're guessing your problem is X so let's try this pill and see if it works." Sleep apnea is pretty easy to diagnose (do you stop breathing in your sleep, and if yes, how many times), and the treatment is simple (wear this machine that helps you breathe).

About this episode, though, I wish the guys would have talked about the fake prom a little more. I'm sure it was something we NoHomersClub boarders were vociferously complaining about--just the gall of a teens era Zombie Simpsons daring to reference to beloved very early, story-setting ("this is how marge met homer") episode. And even by this point the timing didn't make sense, Artie says something about "for 20 years I've waited for this", but it had been nearly 30 years.

I got a CPAP in 2004 after having a sleep study and being diagnosed with severe sleep apnea with an index score of over 60 (ie over 60 apnea events an hour!) And even that was after 6+ years of terrible snoring, even as a high school student. Though, as addressed above, I'm not sure why Henry agreed that sleep apnea/CPAP therapy is overdiagnosed/prescribed. I am pretty sure fatigue is necessary for diagnosis--therefore even someone with mild apnea who reports fatigue is trialed on a CPAP because the benefits outweigh the costs. Though I do know many people have trouble tolerating it, which I find weird. Strap me in and blow that air, boys.

Wanted to mention that if you look at 11:00 on the screen when Kent is getting his back tattoo, you can see a topless mermaids, scandalous nipples and all. Come on Disney, my cats watch this!

I saw Jon Lovitz live a week ago, and he still has excellent stage presence. His act was surprisingly political, but he stayed pretty much on the fence. He definitely leans left, but seems to cling to some antiquated views on the trans and gay community, but always back tracked to "just be nice." All in all, a very funny evening, and he put on a great and lengthy show, despite suffering from a painful sounding cough the entire time.

I always thought the guitar riff when Homer was running from to the fake prom was from Honeymoon in Vegas

Nina, as usual, is correct. I am a hospital based doctor, and for every person on a CPAP, there are 5 who absolutely have sleep apnea and need one. I refer tons of people for sleep studies, but it’s hard for many people to do that whole thing.

The recent episode "A serious Flanders" sort of references cuck memes. Sideshow Mel's wife has a date with Flanders and Mel is playing Xbox in the other room.

Artie's singing at the about watching Marge through the camera has been burned into my brain for years - I have a specific memory of fiddling around with an umbrella during recess with a friend while we referenced that and acted as though the umbrella was said camera. Likewise, Carl's face on the side of the mountain, and Lenny's reaction to him in the helicopter have been good meme fodder in the last few years, so this is one of the Jean era episodes that I actually remembered quite well when it was coming up on the schedule. I have to say that, treatment of sexual harassment/assault aside, I was REALLY pleased by it still. They really managed to capture the spirit of why we love this show so much again in this episode, and it's one of the reasons I hate those "the day Simpsons died" video essays, because there are still gems like this in season 13.

On the topic of CPAP machines, my dad has used one for around 5 years now, and while he's got other health issues going on, it's definitely helped him sleep better and kept my mom sane from his loud-ass snoring during that time. I remember as a kid when he'd fall asleep in my room when laying down on the other bed to help me fall asleep (I was an anxious child and shared the room with my brother), sometimes his snoring would end up waking me up lol

I don't think CPAP machines are over-prescribed. If anything, not enough people are diagnosed for sleep apnea and other sleep disorders because they don't see a doctor about it! But please, don't believe me: observe these medical professionals.

I can’t believe I’m thinking about this but was there another fucking movie reference in this episode?
when Lenny looks up and says
“I don’t think there’s anything in that helicopter for me”
Is that a reference to the Wizard of Oz? when Dorothy says
“I don’t think there’s anything in that black bag for me”
It’s basically the exact same line lol
The only reason I’m even thinking it might be an exact references because of Al Jean lol

In an edible-fueled haze earlier this year, I came up with the concept that Lovitz has been actively campaigning for a CRITIC reboot at Netflix by doing situps in the lobby 24/7, crying, "It STINKS." That really does sum the guy up.

As far the numerous references that are in this episode, I can honestly say I’ve never seen any of them and if something was a reference, it flew right over my head…except for the sex and the city ones. So watching this episode, it was like I was watching a new creation with new and fresh story line, Which made it very entertaining! Sometimes a little ignorance is bliss🙂
