What A Cartoon! - American Dad "Gold Top Nuts"

Thanks to the generous patronage of Andrew, we're taking another look at American Dad! Back in 2018, we covered an episode from one of the earlier seasons, but this time around, our subject matter hails from season 19 of this enduring animated sitcom. If you haven't checked in on American Dad since it moved to TBS nearly a decade ago, you might be surprised by just how strange and experimental it's gotten—or maybe not, since it was always pretty weird. In any case, get ready to sit back and enjoy a podcast only the vile Tiffany's boyfriend would dislike!

so glad you convinced me to watch this, what a wonderfully bizarre episode of television. Clearly I need to catch up on this show and its...20 season run??

I have never heard of this play and now I am fascinated by it.

You gotta wait for the next community podcast! - Henry

Has Henry purchased the mixed nuts? I’m just finishing the episode and I am riveted.

Haven't actually seen the episode myself. From hearing this podcast, it sounds like they were parodying/paying homage to The Lighthouse (2019). I was waiting on one of you guys to mention the possible connection. Great episode as always, I'm ready to start my years watch of the series now!

I have not seen it, only read the summary. I would be down, even if I think it might be pretentious and twee.

I went to a local production of that play years ago and enjoyed it quite a bit overall, but man that second act was a real slog. I'd love to someday hear an entire episode of TS on it.

I would deem cashews to be the best nuts. They have the best oily taste and are the most useful culinary wise for their fat content from making vegan cheeses to being used in curries. Pistachios and Macadamias are also really great nuts, but have become way too expensive to even buy casually. Peanuts are actually much cheaper than every other nut out there, primarily because they require much less maintenance to grow and they are easy to process, plus they are a crop the US doesn't have to export for. Though usually the cheapest peanuts come in the store brand thin plastic bottles for $2.50 a lb.

“Yule. Tide. Repeat." from a few years back skyrocketed to the top of my favorite episodes of primetime animation ever immediately upon airing. The idea that a hacked video of Steve jacking off to Allison Janney being broadcast was enough to undo an apocalypse should have gotten them an Emmy. Idiots.

Nut talk! When I had to go into the office for work more regularly nuts were my go-to snack. Assuming you're not getting the kind loaded up with added sugar or sodium, they're pretty healthy and since they're a good source of protein they actually satisfy those mid-afternoon cravings. It was an easy way to combat snacking on unhealthy garbage. I tended to avoid the mixed nuts though since there's always going to be something in a tin of mixed nuts you like the least and it always feels like there's more of that one. I most often opted for cashews as my nut of choice. It wasn't the cheapest snack option, but given the previous point about protein a tin of cashews lasts a lot longer than say a bag of chips or similar salty snack. American Dad! is the not-so-secret best "McFarlane" show. It's always surprising to me that it survived as long as it has given it was announced post Family Guy cancellation, which was quickly undone before the show got off the ground. I remember, at the time, wondering what's the point of having it if Family Guy is just coming back? Silly me, as American Dad! quickly usurped that show and I maintain even the early episodes are fine. Not as good as what followed, but I'd rather watch Season One American Dad! than pretty much any season of Family Guy. I did lose track of the show following the move to TBS, but I've been getting caught up more regularly as if I don't have anything current I'm planning on watching I'll just skim through the show on Hulu and find episodes I've never seen and usually have a good time. And if you love Christmas specials, American Dad! is among the best in that department. It's just a shame the TBS broadcast schedule usually keeps them away from the holiday so we seem to rarely get new additions to their Christmas plotline these days.

Would love if you did more episodes about episodes of American Dad from the super weird later seasons. An episode on Rabbit Ears or The Three Fs would be a delight.

It's funny, the Mrs. and I are watching King of the Hill *and* American Dad almost daily, and it's actually making my appreciation of The Simpsons deplete. You kind of almost hit it in your intro, but both represent a *far* better ink-and-paint sitcom than the Simpsons that aired/are airing along side them. American Dad has always experimented and *tries*; it deserves a far better status than one of "Family Guy's dumb cousin". KotH and AD have their share of duds, but I actually have shut off episodes from the second half of the Simpsons' life (last week's was a record of some 30 seconds). If AD had a different art style than FG's, it might be appreciated more, but alas, MacFarlane blandness always wins out. The bit with Klaus crashing and exploding after his sanctimonious "How dare you!" is the best part.

Very validating to hear you guys affirm my life choice to watch this show and tell me that yes, it is not crap. But listening to you talk about the nut commercial references in comparison to how people like us relate everythign to The Simpsons, something occurred to me that did not occur to me before: Do you think this episode is maybe riffing on Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play? Especially in the way the middle part has all that bad "indie theater" dialogue about life and existence and the repetition of stories getting turned into ritual?

Regarding American Dad getting renewed at least on TBS. I found this Wall Street Journal article interesting. https://archive.ph/Mychp. The key points being these, “senior executives who oversee the TBS channel were asked by Discovery executives if they could get out of a two-year contract for the animated program “American Dad!,” which is made by Walt Disney Co. , according to people familiar with the matter. The plan didn’t go forward.” and “At the Turner networks—TBS and TNT—the bulk of the original programming team was let go, sending a signal to the remaining workers and Hollywood that the channels were out of the scripted content business as part of the cost cuts. However, Turner’s agreements distributors have covenants that call for original scripted programming.”. So WBD already thought about killing it, but they are also contractually required to make some amount of scripted content. If American Dad survives at TBS it might just be to help fulfill that requirement.

I caught up on pretty much all of the TBS years inbetween the season 17 hiatus, and this specific episode leaked early on Amazon so I bought it and watched it and just watched the insanity unfold. It was such an odd experience because for the entire episode I was just like what the fuck is even happening here

Bryce Hope

Its on Hulu. Season 17 episode 10.

Paul Serna

100% Agree about Rabbit Ears. It's one of the best episodes in modern day American Dad. It'd like a twilight zone premise with a sassy yet disturbing jazz track.
