What A Cartoon Movie! - Toy Story 4

In 2010, Pixar seemingly closed the book on Toy Story. But, nearly a decade later, along came Toy Story 4: a movie that set out to continue a story that had a perfect period placed at the end. The result? A messy adventure that kind of breaks the universe, but one that somehow manages to justify its existence. This month on What A Cartoon Movie, join us as we explore 2019's Toy Story 4. You'll believe a spork can talk!

What A Cartoon Movie! - Toy Story 4

I'm not sure if you guys mentioned it or not and I missed it but, the key that they are trying to get from the old lady is kinda shaped like the kingdom key from ol Kingdom Hearts.

A very Simpson exchange in this one. Homer showing off Snake’s car to Moe. Bob: Trixie Trilogy that’s coming to Disney+ Henry: Right! Bob: I made that up. Henry: I see. I do find Henry is quick to make those “Yes!” comments to when Bob brings up something related to a subject that they haven’t touched on or is obscure.

Buzz’s line about not having an inner voice reminds me of a study I saw recently that said like 30-50% of people don’t have some kind of inner monologue. Are there people out there really just walking around without an ongoing dialogue with themselves?

I agree with Bob that while Randy Newman's songs he sings in movies can feel samey, the music itself is usually pretty good. It would make sense that the best non-"Friend in Me" movie song was "When She Loved Me" in Toy Story 2 where it was sung by Sarah McLachlan. I'm surprised Pixar doesn't have diffetent singers cover them more often considering tons of artists have done their own versions of Randy Newman songs. Ranging from Barbara Streisand to Nina Simone and Linda Ronstadt to Three Dog Night. Different vocals could help change up the pace, making a generic Randy Newman song sound fresher and unique.

The treatment of the villain didn't bother me in this because of how similar her motivations were to Woody's. I thought they were both basically acting like villains so I was seeing it more as a conflict between two rival cults.

You guys mention briefly that someone at Pixar must be a Shining fan and someone in fact is-- Lee Unkrich, director of TS3 and Coco, is famously a HUGE fan of The Shining and has slipped references and nods to it in quite a few of the films he's worked on at Pixar (the easiest to spot being Sid's family house using the same carpet as the Overlook). He most recently edited a GIGANTIC book all about the history, production, and culture surrounding the movie since leaving Pixar and is such a superfan, he at one point actually owned the screen-used sweater that Danny wears in the film (the Apollo 13 one). He has since donated the sweater to the LA County Museum of Art, but Unkrich definitely has a history of wearing this cinematic hyperfixation on his sleeve. So the next time you're pretty sure you've spotted a reference to The Shining in a Pixar movie, you likely have Lee Unkrich to thank.

I don't think there is anything inherently dated about the relationship between kids and toys in these movies. Some kids are just toy kids, that's true today like it was 30 years ago. I had friends who only wanted to play sports or collect trading cards. Some kids even were even into marbles. I was an action figure kid and my daughter is really into toys - Barbie, Bluey, LOL Surprise, etc. My son never took to them, he loves his tablet and Switch, and even when he was a toddler didn't really play with toys unless someone played with him. Santa even brought him his own Woody for his very first Christmas and he tried to throw it away last year and both my wife and I were adamant that he's not allowed to throw that toy out. Now Woody (and Buzz and Bullseye) lives in his toy box. His voice box also stopped working years ago. I guess they don't make them like they used to. One toy that has survived is Forky. I saw the absurdity in paying Disney money for a toy designed to resemble a spork with some googly eyes and pipe cleaners so that wasn't bought by me or my wife. I only mention this because both of the Forky toys my kids have (an electronic talking one and another with wheels) lack the Pizza Planet logo despite their size. Maybe they added that later? These were part of the initial run of Toy Story 4 merch. I do think this is the worst Toy Story movie, which still makes it one of the best Pixar movies of the 2010s. Gabby Gabby is a bad villain and the conflict isn't as compelling as the previous films, but it's still an enjoyable watch. Forky is fun, but only for the first 20 minutes or so of the film and then he's sidelined. I don't know that more Forky would have made it more entertaining, but maybe spread him out a bit more. I had an emotional response when it was over though, but I feel like a lot of that is external from the film. It's like what you guys touched on, I'm reflecting back on 30 years of these characters and wondering if I'll see them again (probably) and it's that feeling that's getting me choked up. Perhaps this movie doesn't quite earn that, but the franchise does so I'll let it slide. Even so, it's the Toy Story movie I'm least likely to watch these days. I think Toy Story 3 is the best movie once you separate just how mind-blowing it was to see the technical achievement of the first, but it's not the most fun or digestible. Toy Story 2 is probably that for me, even though I slot the first one over it. The Woody character in that is just hard to watch sometimes. I have reservations about a fifth. We certainly don't need it, but at the same time, movies about a toy world are inherently fun so it's a franchise that could just keep going, but I don't think Disney is ready to let go of Woody and Buzz completely. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but if any franchise has earned it, I suppose it's this one as I never thought they could pull off a Toy Story 4.

Duke Kaboom is also based on Canadian stuntman Ken Carter, the subject of the NFB documentary THE DEVIL AT YOUR HEELS (1981), in which the entire thing is a build-up to him doing a jaw-dropping dirtbike jump without any planning at all - hence the joke of Kaboom being very good at crashing.

"Someone at Pixar must be a huge Shining fan." Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3 and Coco, very recently released a *$1,500* collector’s box about The Shining. I would not be surprised if the easter eggs at the antique store was his suggestion. https://www.taschen.com/en/limited-editions/film/66983/stanley-kubrick-s-the-shining

From all the complaints you're giving to this movie i feel like you need to give Shrek 2 a chance. It's much better than the first and has the plot beats you want from this movie

A little pet peeve of mine concerning the rhetoric around potato head in this movie. There’s a screenshot of a paragraph that seems to go viral every couple of months about how Disney worked so hard going through “30 years of an extended media catalogue, with outtakes, video games, and cut lines from Don Rickles for potato head in this movie. And reading the paragraph you think “yeah they did an amazing job”. But you watch the movie and I think he says like 3 or 4 lines. The best one is “hey watch it buddy” which I think they get from Toy Story 1 anyway.

I really liked this! really satisfying exploration of a surprisingly watchable third sequel. also: I don't know what you've got planned for your Pixar summer but I rilly hope you skip over some more obvious classic choices and hit Turning Red! it's easy to dismiss as the apology movie if you haven't seen it but it's genuinely a lot better than the confused Up, the hateful Wall-E, and the creepy Ayn Rand lite Incredibles

Apologies for my mistake. I’m someone who has only just started to like drop rides (only if they have great storytelling), so I’d suggest maybe giving it a try if you ever do visit that park. The unique story of Disney Sea’s Tower of Terror is great. - Henry

Henry: I didn't go on Tower of Terror at Disney Sea because I've never been to Disney Sea and also I hate drop rides

I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would after being a fellow cynic when it was announced but it's definitely an easy 3.5/5 and a solid movie in its own right. I did ultimately walk out of it feeling like the trailers working on me emotionally better than the movie itself did. That final trailer that used "God Only Knows" by Beach Boys made me well up by come the time of seeing it in movies my eyes were dry while recognizing that I was seeing was emotional. I think Toy Story 3 had just emotionally exhausted me as I too am old enough to remember having grown up when the original was this big new thing and aging up with the franchise/Pixar in general. So when all the characters at the end are hugging and saying goodbye it definitely impacted me but the part in my brain going "okay. so how long until we see these characters in another movie" won out. I've been lied to before, Disney!

"Dear Mr. Pixar, there are too many toys in Toy Story nowadays. Please eliminate three. I am not a crackpot." In all seriousness, Bonnie's toys are really, really uninteresting and have gotta go. My prediction/wish is that Toy Story 5 is about mainly adult Andy with kids who gets nostalgic for Woody (we learn that he was given to him by his dad or something?) and they go out looking for him on some kind of road trip.

The ventriloquist dummies may just like to be controlled, they may never have thought to go any farther then that.

with the announcement of at least a 5th Toy story in development, I do wonder where the hell they'll take the story...I wouldn't call 4 a miss, but it wasn't needed.
