Talking Futurama - Crimes of the Hot

Let the games begin! We're kicking off the summer with an animator-punishing episode all about climate change! In this semi-sequel to "Mother's Day," we discover Professor Farnsworth's fundamental robot design has doomed an earth to an early death via global warming. Will all of the robots have to be destroyed, or can they instead burp and fart their way to a stinky solution? Whatever happens, Hedonismbot certainly doesn't care!

I've never been around windmills enough to know how lethal they are for birds, but I do know that the greatest enemy of the bird is the window. My first job out of college was working out of the Hancock Tower in Boston. If you've ever seen an image of the Boston skyline, the Hancock Tower is the big building usually around the center of the image that just looks like a glass tower. It was routine to be walking out of that building at the end of the day and seeing these poor little birds in a crumpled heap on the ground because they flew right into one of the many windows. And there were probably many I never even saw as there was often a custodian roaming the area around the building scooping up trash and crippled sparrows. Poor little guys.

As others have already said, Evergreen is in Washington. I used to deejay there in the late 90s/early 2000s when you could rent it out for raves.

It’s funny and confusing to me when you guys talk about what’s on Hulu and Disney+. In the UK I believe all the stuff that is on Hulu is on Disney+ (with the glaring exception of King of the Hill for some reason). Just in case you haven’t tried it, to unlock everything on Disney+ you have to go to settings and tick a box that says you are over 18.

I don’t know about the lethality of windmills on birds compared to other buildings. But I do know that certain people who’s interests may or may not align with energy corporations like to claim that wind turbines, create a pressure wave which can be lethal to birds and bats. As if those companies wouldn’t kill the animals in the most painful way possible if they found a way that it would make them a profit! P.s I can’t believe you guys have fallen for the “Fahrenheit is what % hot it is” memeaganda! Come on guys Celsius superiority all the way!

This is a top 10 episode for me, possibly top 5. "I apologize for nothing" is maybe my favorite Futurama line of all time, neck and neck with "Tell them I hate them". Then there's the film strip, Al Gore's inspired cameo, headless body of Agnew, and just a bunch of fun visuals and great jokes. Maybe not the most original idea but the execution is so good here I had a great time.

enjoyed this episode and the buster poindexter sidebar at the end. back in 2006, the 'reunited' new york dolls played my radio station's music festival. the only original members were david johansen (who, as you pointed out, is still with us in 2023) and guitarist sylvain sylvain (who, sadly, is not). i remember david being very interested in learning about the various ships docked along the waterfront and that the power went out during their set but they kept going like it was nothing (the dolls had the mercer arts center collapse around them in 1973 after all). there's a picture of me with david somewhere but let's just say we both look a lot better now than we did 17 years ago.

Speaking of the Bender “I got mail,” line I swear I had an AOL Bender voice pack in 2004. (My family had dial up AOL internet until 2006.)

Kyoto > Tokyo. Easily.

As someone who attended Evergreen, it pains me that you two got the state wrong. It is The Evergreen State College (or, TESC) and it is so named because Washington State is the evergreen state. Oregon is the beaver state. On another note I can't believe that Matt has never dropped a ton of cash to create a solid animation program at his alma mater...

Correction for Henry: The "to" in "Kyoto" doesn't mean "all," it means capital/metropolis. ("Kyo" roughly means imperial city, so "Kyoto" is roughly "capital imperial city" and Tokyo is roughly "east capital city") I see you used Google Translate for the definition of 都, because it auto-detects it to Chinese, giving you the Chinese definition which is "all." Switch it to Japanese and you get "capital." Be careful with machine translation! Like Bob did for this ep, you can always ask me to double-check your Japanese research (I've been having to correct you a lot recently but most listeners aren't going to see my corrections). Or your other friends who also know the language ETA: Hey! I take issue with you knocking points off of Kyoto for being "older and mustier" -- part of the beauty of Kyoto is it didn't get destroyed as much by WW2 air raids, so a lot of old buildings still remain. I love the blend of old and new there; it's my personal fav city to visit

Nixon didn't create the EPA to help the environment in the slightest, it was literally "meeting those hippies halfway" as a distraction to the Vietnam War.

With the Evergreen State College, Groening also apparently grew up on SW Evergreen Terrace in Portland. No 742 on that street though.

Appreciate the info, and it's possible that we didn't mention it (this was recorded weeks ago). But in general if we don't mention a fact about a thing we'd prefer listeners to respond with "here's something else that's interesting" instead of "did you guys miss this?" - Bob

Henry I know you quickly corrected yourself, but the idea that Vancouver would care about basketball enough that we would riot over The Grizzlies losing is the funniest thing I've heard all year An no Bob, we don't riot over winning, we riot over losing. Because the Canucks are the losingest bunch of losers that ever lost. Though we WILL riot if we ever win.

it is still bonkers to me that the Environmental Protection Agency was put into place by Nixon of all presidents. nowadays it would be wild for even the sitting Democratic president like Biden to create something like that vs the modern "well we'll try to have this sorted by, let's say, 2050" approach. I was always a little surprised the Nixon connection never came into play in its role in The Simpsons Movie. Maybe Groening had just had his fill of tricky Dick.

Did you guys miss the fact that the global warming animation is a key part of al gores Oscar Winning Documentary An Inconvenient Truth? or did you mention it and I missed it?
