Talking Futurama - The Why of Fry

Futurama is winding down—or so the writers think—so it's time for the show to start answering some big mysteries. Namely, how Fry really ended up in the future. Telltale shadows will be explained as we travel back to 1999 and witness how Nibbler is the puppet master of the entire Futurama saga thus far! And since you're listening to this podcast more than 20 years after "The Why of Fry" aired, try and look surprised.

I always took the "she must be the other" as a manipulation tactic by Nibler to fool Fry into doing what he wants Fry to do. If she is the other, they need need episode where Nibler tells Leelas parents and that's part of the reason they drop her off at the orphanarium, but would it make sense? Also, time travel is possible. You're telling me an advance species like the Niblonians can't do it, but there's other instances of it...

With European ears it seems impossible anyone could hear the song “team America fuck yeah” & think it’s anything other than critical of the USA. Although I can picture a guy in a punisher t-shirt proudly explaining how the USA are “dicks who fuck assholes”

Regarding "Vincent" - if you're like me and just generally have a hard time stomaching Don McLean, check out Chet Atkins' fingerstyle guitar arrangement of it. It really is a pretty song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k5cYy-8Gr4

After Fry's life doesn't improve in 1999, Fry becomes an antivax shutin in 2020. Seen in season 18 of Futurama

I always know a Chris Carter episode is about to start when it opens with a long, purple soliloquy by Mulder.

If Fry had stayed in 1999, he would have died in the pandemic.

The "Mighty One" for me will always be the red-capped, portal traversing blonde kid.

2023 dog shit update (pupdate, if you will). I too grew up in the Midwest and no one really picked it up. Gross. I live in Los Angeles today and don’t have a dog, but dog sit often. Almost everyone in my neighborhood has a dog, and everyone uses the little baggies, but also, like everyone has a sign on their lawn saying dogs aren’t allowed to go there. Even if you pick it up. Even if it’s just pee. Like, okay, tell that to the dog? It’s truly a no-win situation. There’s a lot of panicked “no, no; you’re not allowed to poop there” as if the dog understood or cared.

Wholeheartedly endorse the point about Back to the Future 3 being better than 2. I like both, but all the practical western stuff in 3 is really fun and IMO the train stuff is no more ridiculous than stuff in 2, and Thomas Wilson as Mad Dog Tannen is goddamn great

As a big Dave Matthews Band fan I still get a laugh out of the joke at their expense. Great episode!

I find it amusing that the day this podcast went live a new episode of Futurama did as well with a joke about tasting colors. Anyway, this one is great even if it's mainly a Fry story. I think it's one of the best episodes at actually humanizing Fry rather than treat him as a punching bag that produces laughs. It makes so much sense to an outsider how one life doesn't compare to millions, but it's far easier to say that when it's not your life that's the one being sacrificed. And Billy West's line reading of "but it was my life," is one of my favorites from him.

Bob lied, I did not work on any cards. Stop making up facts about me!

First two episodes were good. Third was a dud. My head nearly exploded when I found out Ken Keeler wrote it under a pseudonym.

Native New Yorker here, I never put much thought into the "in line" vs. "on line" thing until it was brought up here. I didn't know it was a regional thing and I've always heard and used them interchangeably. Like you just say the one that flows better with the sentence.

ToonJay723

When Leela is referred to "The Other" I had thought that was referring to "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" when Nibbler needed someone to help stop the brainspawn with the help of Fry last season.

I really hope someone got fired for that blunder

Re "on line"- when I lived in California, I had a friend from Brooklyn i was trying to meet at some packed bar. I was already inside, and mad bc he was very late. I texted to ask where he was, and he responded "sorry, I'm online". I assumed that meant he was at home playing COD or something so I left. Now I live in Brooklyn, and yes ny-ers say "on line", and even type it out that way on official MTA signage etc. BUT, WEIRDLY, if you point this out or ask any of them about it, they deny it, abs swear they say "IN line." Also re "on long Island", I think that might be an island thing. I tell people I was born ON guam, and that I lived ON Oahu.

I love this episode, but I also think it could’ve made a fantastic movie (perhaps in place of the IMO forgettable D&D episode). Likewise, Leela discovering her true heritage could’ve been worked into a longer story that also dealt with the mutants’ “second class citizenship” issues. Oh well. A man can dream, though….

The latest Futuramas use cartoon clips... and they're from COPYRIGHTED ones... Fleischer's AIN'T SHE SWEET and Iwerks' ROOM RUNNERS. I'm wondering if they're short enough/small enough to not warrant clearance.

I frankly can't believe I remember this, but whether he is aware of it or not, Henry has definitely heard the song Vincent by Don McLean. He played a clip of it when you guys covered "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show" the first time, years ago. It's what's being referenced when Grandpa says "The world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" when Homer is in the coma at the hospital.

The hulu series hasn't really missed a beat for me, but then again I just love spending any time in the World of Tomorrow! This was always my favorite eposide. I know the giant brains are kind of rando, but that's why they're the villains of the show--random brains are so funny--your just like: okay? I do think it's funny that Bob and Herny are like: nah we probably won't do the comedy central run--then spend 45 minutes all angry the three-second short in the intro was used five times. XD You probably could have watched Meanwhile in that time lol

Me, Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at my phone at the mention of Bull Durham, a movie I've been thinking about a lot recently. It's a really good movie! Heterosexuality in movies is never as good as it is there.

This was such a great episode. The new hulurama has been pretty good, and I love that’s it’s every week and not a binge. How is everyone else liking it?
