What A Cartoon! - Daria "Fire!"

It's been over five years since we last covered Daria, and while little has happened in terms of the show's potential reboot, that doesn't mean we've expended all of our possible thoughts on this beloved MTV cartoon. (Which may be why this podcast is nearly three hours long.)

Last time, we examined an episode where the series outgrew its "Daria owns the normies" formula, and this time, we're looking at the show evolve into something with a lot more continuity, as the love triangle plot kicks off and threatens to tear Daria and Jane apart. So listen in, and join us as we embrace the apathy of the '90s and discuss our favorite cynical teens of the era!

Yeah, “Everybody Hurts” is replaced with stock music in the DVDs, but they did manage to license “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” for the anthology/legends episode.

The Tom era of the series gets a lot of criticism at times, but I personally found the instances that challenged Daria and Jane’s friendship (and Daria’s worldview in general) to be the most effective storylines. ‘I Loathe A Parade’, ‘Dye, Dye My Darling’, the first movie ‘Is It Fall Yet’ and the excellent series finale (in terms of standard episodes) ‘Boxing Daria’ are all great examples of this, and I hope you guys are able to explore at least one of those in the future. ‘Boxing Daria’ in particular had one of my favorite comedic and emotional gut-punches by finally having Jake say something genuinely insightful and helpful to his daughter with roughly 4 minutes left in the series. Agreed with how well and carefully written The Fashion Club is throughout. Who’d have thought that Quinn would have one of the best arcs in terms of personal growth? The one-two punch in ‘Lucky Strike’ that was Daria telling Quinn in no uncertain terms that she’s not dumb, followed by Quinn going to bat for Daria and admitting to being her sister felt so damn earned, at least when I saw it last. Keep up the good work, gentlemen. Happy to be here.

My sister was very into Daria, and being a younger brother, I ended up getting into it as well despite being too young to be in the target audience and a lot of the jokes didn't always land. I do remember kind of falling off of the show during the whole love triangle thing, so it's nice have an excuse to revisit it now. In terms of using licensed music in Daria, I do remember one particular use of "Everybody Hurts" in a season 1 episode that just doesn't work without it, similar to how Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" missing from that Mission Hill episode really kills the joke.

Used to love staying up and watching Daria and Degrassi and flipping back and forth between that and adult swim. Wow just hearing this sends me back to being 16.

wish P+ had the movies. and you're right about the licensed music ultimately being inconsequential...did a rewatch not too long ago, and I kinda remembered some scenes that had license music, but overall, the stock instrumentals worked.

Rewatching this show I always forget how entertaining and funny Quinn and The Fashion Club are.
