Talking Futurama - That Darn Katz!
Added 2025-01-13 20:53:54 +0000 UTC
I CAN HAS PODCAZT? No, you're not seeing things; we're currently in the year 2025. But this month, we're flashing back to 2010, when the internet was mostly obsessed with looking at pictures of cats instead of... the thing it's obsessed with now. And this episode of Futurama cashes in on late '00s cat-mania with a tale of how kitty cuteness can conquer our hearts—and possibly the world. So listen in and hear us discuss an episode that definitely WON'T make you hungry for Tootsie Rolls!

Back in my day, memes used to have owls on them. “O RLY?” You’d say. Same Impact font, and then one day someone put that text over a cat and the internet changed forever. Nowadays the main cat memes are black cats are voids, orange cats share one brain cell, and the phenomenon of loafing.

Rebeltaxi was my lifeblood, introduced me to so many wonderful pieces of animation and got me to have a deeper love/interest of the medium's workings

I rewatched Green Yonder recently, but it was like being abducted by aliens in that I remembered nothing afterward. - Bob

Also in Into the Wild Green Yonder, they replaced Dark Matter with whale oil to fuel ships.

huh, the musical bit in the clip after Amy's doctorate is denied sounds a lot like Ace of Base's Cruel Summer
edit: whoops, the original song is by Bananarama, that's my bad

also just clean the damn litter box daily or frequently enough. buy the good litter. sprinkle in some baking soda with each clean. it only stinks if you're a lazy cat owner.

Fr. The show was a guilty pleasure of mine for a time. I just assumed it was so straightforwardly silly that there was no real harm in it. I was the fool all along

It's my pedantic duty to point out that at the end of 'Benders Game' all dark matter in the universe is rendered inert which may explain why Leela throws Nibblers waste directly into the lava pit.
Though it doesn't explain why Leela calls it 'highly volatile' and would need a forklift when inert dark matter is shown to crumble at the touch but if they're happy to ignore the events of that movie, they won't get an argument from me.

I'm happy that the public opinion of cats has changed because the dog propagandists and their slander against cats were in control for far too long. All Dogs Go To Heaven? No thank you!

After I saw someone point out how Ancient Aliens exists to show how people use conspiracy theories to justify a belief that white people didn't create something they don't understand; I couldn't look at it the same way again.

There aren't blu-rays for the Fox seasons, since they were produced in SD, particularly the CG bits.

Fine, I'll say it: Neuter your damn cat and it won't pee all over the place, and even if it does it won't stink so bad.

Random question for buying Futurama hard copies. Amazon has 1-8 DVD collection for $100. Are there no Blu-rays of the early seasons?

I commented on the original post which appears to have been lost to time. You will all have to wonder what wisdom I shared for I will not repeat myself! Instead, I'll share a different anecdote. As one of the Talking Simpsons network self-professed toy boys, I have never had an issue with my collection and cats knocking them over and I've had a cat pretty much my entire 40+ years on this Earth. My current home is littered with figures on shelves and various surfaces and my kitty could not care less. I will say, the one problem I did have was back in probably 2009 when I, probably unwisely, splurged on a Hot Toys Batman from The Dark Knight and set it up on display on my kitchen table (I was a very cool bachelor). One of my cats, who were kittens at the time, actually ate one of Christian Bale's Batarangs. At least I assume she did. One of the remaining ones had been chewed. I never saw it in her litter box, but I also never found it.

Two thoughts:
I think the reason cats are well known for their buttholes is their penchant for coziness. When you sleep supline, your cat will want to curl up on your chest. Often that involves getting a face full of stink eye as they settle in.
The original pizzagate shooter was just killed in a shootout with police. I think there's a fairly direct line between Ancient Aliens and his death. The History Channel, like TLC, A&E, and Bravo before it began with the high minded ambition of enriching culture through education. And like them, it quickly devolved to serving the lowest common denominator. The old joke about them, as seen in Weinstein's own Mission Hill, was their obsession with WWII, but towards the end of their Hitler era, educational material had run dry so they leaned into more speculative programming around things like Nazi occultism or supposed Wermacht superweapons. AA dovetailed nicely into that and fed directly into the mainstreaming of more and more crackpots and conspiracies. I have the feeling we wouldn't be facing the spectre of an RFK FDA had the show not proven so popular.

Watch Scotty Finds a Home and tell me that squat yellow kitten with a red shirt and blue pants didn't influence Matt Groening in anyway.

When I watched the episode, I was SHOCKED that it didn't have one of the cats ask "can I haz cheeseburger?" or do something as a more specific/direct reference to lolcats. Based on your talk of the commentary, it seems like more of the "a lot of the staff didn't know/like the memes" and not a "pointed choice not to reference a fad that would age like milk" kind of thing, which makes sense given the Susan Boyle stuff from only a couple of episodes back. Either way, it was a nice surprise!

This episode may not be in the top 10 (or 20), but I had a pretty good time with it, even though it does lose a lot of steam in the third act, as you both discussed
