What A Cartoon! - Wander Over Yonder "The Cartoon" and "The Bot"

Thanks to premium patron ToonJay, we're continuing our coverage of all things Craig McCracken with a look at his short-lived series, Wander Over Yonder. Listen in as we explore two distinctly different episodes of this colorful, snappy cartoon: one that sends up the worst period of TV animation, and another that depicts the possible rehabilitation of an evil robot via the power of friendship (and floppy sun hats).

What A Cartoon! - Wander Over Yonder "The Cartoon" and "The Bot"

Nate Stevenson's DNA is all over that second segment in the best way. I'd love to see WAC cover his version of She-Ra sometime, I don't know if I'd say it's my #1 favourite cartoon of the 2010s, but it's absolutely in my top 3

I assume "I Am Beep Boop" is a reference to "I Am Groot" from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy?

Speaking of Filmation, I once looked up an episode of Bravestarr that featured him meeting Sherlock Holmes. I was surprised by how nice the animation was in the episode, and I realized it was because the episode featured all new characters and locations, so they couldn't just recycle animation. They had to make new animation!

Great episode, I always enjoy it when you discover something new outside your comfort zone. I was also born in 1982 but unlike you He-Man was my first real TV obsession. I think it's more likely because in the UK they seemed to eek out all the episodes until 1989, with repeats of old episodes also being shown, so it was always in the cartoon rotation. My family also go a VCR in the mid-80's, so I filled lots of VHS tapes with He-Man and re-watched them and even re-enacted them with my brother. I'd never seen Wander Over Yonder but the episode you covered was made for me. You also mentioned the current state of Disney television animation and more your lack of knowledge of it, as nothing had really filtered into your view. Disney is doing a lot better than Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon in bringing out new, decent television animation with shows like Hamster & Gretel, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Kiff, Hailey's On It!, Primos and StuGo coming out in the last few years compared to almost nothing from the other two networks. Those shows might not be the next big thing but they are all pretty solid.

Only watched a few episodes of this show, but thought it was always beautifully designed. One of my first bosses ended up transferring to Disney to help out on this show. I went to have lunch with him and saw the Wander bullpen. Disney always decorates their show spaces beautifully, but Wander's seemed unique because they had just blown up their model sheets and Dos/Don'ts sheets to hang on the wall (I'm taking at least 8 feet wide). They are, to this day, some of the most beautifully articulated design sheets I have ever seen. Was very excited to hear this episode! Thank you!
