Talking Simpsons - Diatribe of a Mad Housewife With TheRealJims

"If I write a book, will they tell me when it comes out?" - Marge Simpson
Learn all about the publishing world as we discuss an episode that both lampoons and harpoons the world of bodice-ripping romance novels.
Our guest: TheRealJims
As the husband of a romance novelist. I can let you know that writing risky scenes are often more of a headache than anything. Coming up with fresh new ways to describe basically the same thing over and over is a challenge. She will often skip that part when writing and come back when the book is finished. However this isn't always the the case and I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being the benefactor of my wife having a particularly good day of writing.

"You listen to what I say. Your body has known the cleansing touch of soap. Prithee tell me thou art not a sodomite." "Nope, not even a Gomorrean!"
In contrast to the interpretation given on the pod, my assumption was this was a fanciful way of a more stereotypical exchange, "You actually care about what I say and you're unconventionally well-groomed. Please tell me you aren't gay (because those would be signs, and I want to bed you)."
(Keeping the euphemism, I would take "not even Gomorrean" -- i.e. something lesser than Sodomite on a spectrum, based on "not even" -- to mean "I'm not even bisexual.")

I do actually remember watching this one live and it might be the "newest" episode to enter a joke into my permanent repertoire: my sister and I LOVE the joke about turning up the radio to (somehow) cover up the smell of your fart, and often reference it when in a car together. Overall the episode is pretty decent, the Homer subplot is ABSOLUTELY disconnected and unnecessary, but I think the Marge-focused plotline is solid, especially for the era.

As a frequently Comedy Central watcher, I think we were appropriately mean toward MadTV. As bad as SNL could be; MadTV would use their reoccurring characters as a crutch so often; characters like Stuart or Ms. Swan were used up to 35+ times. You would get some gold every now and then like Will Sasso as Steven Seagal; but they were few and far between. What MadTV is mostly guilty for is wasting and poorly utilizing their cast members, most of whom would go on to do much better, funnier things to show off their talents. I think there's a reason you never hear about any dedicated writers who worked on MadTV.

TheRealJims mentioned the Sea Captain, which is who I nominated to have a Simpsons Histories video on in the comments of his video. It's interesting that they have a lot of sea/water episodes and don't use him that much, which is very true for this episode especially.

You said the idea of Inside Out has been done a lot. Honestly you could say the same about How To Train Your Dragon as it's a plot that's been seen in a lot of movies. It's all in the execution and both Inside Out and How To Train Your Dragon do their plots very well

You praised Dan Castellaneta’s Reverend Jim impression. He had time to perfect it—he was Doc Brown!

Pretty much the lasting memories of characters from MadTV for me were not the ones invented for the show but the ones that were the magazine regulars but animated for the first few seasons, like Spy Vs Spy. Which funny enough also had the same sort of Simpsons transition where they were originally animated by Klasky Csupo for the first season before switching to Rough Draft for the 2nd-3rd seasons, headlined by Rich Moore of all people. Though I guess in terms of show originals, I guess the claymation segments were memorable too for some folks, especially since Patton Oswalt wrote some of them like the Rudolph ones.

This has nothing to do with the episode. One of Henrys tweets was shown on the Philip Defranco show today.

Thanks to this episode, my sisters and I still call the Home Depot “Krusty Home Depot.” “I’m going to the Krusty Home Depot to buy a set of screwdrivers.” 😂

I avoid fast food, but if it's late at night and I just got out of a concert or some similar event and it's the only option, I'll hit McDonald's and just get a couple of cheeseburgers and maybe some fries. Dump the fries in the bag and unwrap the burgers before leaving the parking lot and you have yourself a very easy to consume meal while driving. Though all things considered, I'd rather not spend money at McDonalds.
I had the same reaction as Henry when the Marvin Monroe death reveal happened in the 138th episode spectacular. I thought I missed something even though I figured it was impossible since I rarely missed a premiere, and I watched the hell out of the syndication run, and no one ever mentioned it when discussing a new episode the day after. I probably didn't know what happened to him until the internet came around and this stuff was much easier to follow. His return here strikes me as a throwaway joke. It's not particularly smart or clever, but the character was never beloved so the continuity disruption doesn't register.

Barely even a joke alert: could the son in Marge's book being named Bartleby be a reference to Melville's story "Bartleby, the Scrivener"? Frankly I would prefer if it wasn't.

When this first aired my oldest son was 10 at the time. We latched on to the “BUY ME! BUY ME!” siren quote. That is until Mom got mad at us for continuously doing it at the grocery store!

Gotta be one of the briefest episode descriptions for the podcast, right?

I believe Bob and Henry's talk about drive through food, and Henry's confirmation that he drove an automatic, triggered a realization in me of why I typically DON'T care for drive through, and would almost always prefer to go inside to eat.
Most of the cars I've owned, including my current one and the first three i owned in my teens and early 20s, have been manual transmissions. My first car didn't even have cup holders, so the prospect of juggling food and drink while trying to steer and shift was VERY unappealing to me, as well as very unsafe.
But my girlfriend, who is originally from the LA area and therefore much more into 'car culture ' than I loves them, but at least when we get it together, she can assist me in making sure I eat and drink safely , as she can unwrap items, apply various sauce packets, and easily dispose of the trash.

While I haven't found a UPA cartoon so far about the idea of "emotions inside your head" , there is a 1943 Disney cartoon titled Reason and Emotion which does have this as its premise, and Inside Out director Pete Docter has indeed cited it as an influence on his film. It's a wartime propaganda short with the message being that, in times of crisis, people shouldn't let their emotions get the better of them.

My family sat down to watch this together. As soon as we all heard the "BUY ME! BUY ME!" we all laughed extremely hard at it. Then it became a running joke in our home to say that phrase over and over randomly. Sweet memories
