Lee Ermey was originally just the military advisor on this movie, but the original guy playing the drill Sergeant wasn't good, so Ermey was given the part, and I think he mainly improv'ed that initial speech at the beginning of the movie. He was also the police chief when you saw Se7en. He also had a minor part in another great movie "Dead Man Walking".
