Interesting! Thank you for the history lesson. I think I repressed most of my own childhood so I don't actually remember if I was alone a lot as a kid after school. El's situation definitely sucks :(

2019-05-03 02:39:48 +0000 UTCIn the 80s... no, not traditional. Most homes were two-earner households, and we were the first generation to get the term "latchkey kids." (Though of course, we weren't the first--or last--latchkey kids. As long as parents work, that'll happen.) At the time, kids being on their own for hours after school was more less normal. In El's case, she's stuck in the house and has no one other than Hopper to actually interact with, so it's a lot harder on her than it would be on the boys, who can just call each other. It was kind of a weird time, because the working moms were being severely judged by their elders, who thought they were neglecting their kids, but the ones who stayed at home were judged as not being sufficiently feminist.
