Most of the censorship of the cursing (and most of the cursing itself, for that matter) doesn't occur 'til Season 2, but you might as well get the right version now. The other thing is, there are two versions of the show up on Amazon Prime (in the US), there's a regular version and there's a 4K version (it's labeled "The Expanse (4K UHD)"). You should watch the 4K version, because it's complete -- the non-4K version has some problems, some of which were fixed but some of which weren't. So watch the 4K version for the "purest" Expanse experience. :)

You'll notice the difference. Avarsala for one is the Shakespeare of cursing haha

Sorry: today's world. I think that is certainly one of the intentions of the authors is to have readers and watchers reflect on the various dimensions of human nature and how it leads to what seems sometimes as endless conflict. I hope you have now noticed that our little crew from the Canterbury reflects a microcosm of the larger world: Belter (Naomi), Earthers (Jim and Amos) and Martian (Alex) and how they are struggling already when challenged with stereotypes that Martians are guilty of as well (Earthers are takers, Belters are terrorists etc). But they work on problems together and come up with successful solutions. And there is intense respect for the physical laws of nature on these shows as well as a super practical outlook on life and death ("ok if I recycle him?") That is a choice becoming more popular even today!! No shields, no "ray guns" etc there is thrust gravity and spin gravity and microgravity and coriolis effects. Pay close attention to these details because they are portrayed with amazing accuracy and relevant to so much that happens on the show. Hope you are hooked by now!

Great reaction, and interesting, thoughtful comments. I wanted to comment on the Global Warming and life expectancy issues you raised. The Expanse definitely deals with the long term effects of Climate Change / Global Warming, but they do it in a subtle way. For instance, if you watch the opening credit sequence (the full one, not the 15 second title card that SyFy replaced it with in most of the episodes they aired so they could fit in another commercial) and watch closely, you'll see some animations suggesting the melting of ice sheets, and you'll also see that there is a seawall around both the island of Manhattan and Liberty Island (where the Statue is). There are also clues in title cards here and there. In the very first episode, Chrisjen Avasarala interrogates a suspected OPA terrorist in what is captioned as a black site in "Hamptons Island New York." As you may know, the easternmost end of Long Island (East of Manhattan) includes an area collectively known as "The Hamptons" (towns of East Hampton, Southampton, and others). The Hamptons are part of Long Island currently, but the show is suggesting that after the sea levels have risen, they will be an island unto themselves. Later in the series, you'll see someone visit Anchorage, Alaska, but in the show's world, this is captioned as "Anchorage Island, Yukon Archipelago." So the show definitely acknowledges Climate Change, it just doesn't overtly comment on it. As to life expectancy, I think even the most dire predictions of the future acknowledge that the long term trend is toward longer and longer life spans for most humans, even if we're currently in the midst of a bit of a backslide. Over time, we will cure more and more diseases, plus we will likely figure out the cellular factors behind aging and find ways to thwart or reverse many of them (we can already do this with mice). Remember, we're either 200 (TV) or 300 (books) years in the future, so despite our best efforts to destroy ourselves, it's likely that science will find ways to keep us alive longer nevertheless. As you noted, though, environmental factors, dangerous work conditions, and other differences lead to big discrepancies in life expectancy in the three primary concentrations of human population (Earth, Mars, Belt).

They purposely didn't translate the belter, because you are just a no good earther :) (They purposely did so so to make it feel exotic, and feel like an outsider) Here is a source that might help haha https://www.memrise.com/course/1476694/lang-belta-belter-creole-phrasebook/ I noticed you are watching the Syfy version. Not sure If I said this before, but try and source from either Space(canadian Syfy station) or Amazon, as SyFy censors language horribly, and especially some characters like Avarsarala make swearing an artform haha :) . Like in this episode, when Alex deployed the cannons, he prefaced it with 'Enough of this Shit', which Syfy cut. PDC point defense cannons. It goes into more in the books, but martians call earthers Takers, because in this period due to automation, most earthers are live off a government handout, known as 'The Basic', and aren't even allowed access to education or professional training, basically just on the economic scrapheap, whereas on Mars everyone is industrious towards the aim of Terrafoming. So martians view Earthers as moochers. Interesting bit of trivia. The Expanse originally started as an RPG that the two others another friend designed. The friend had to move away, so they had to get rid of him from the RPG, his nickname was Shed :D Scuttle old naval term to sink your own ship to prevent capture. On earth, there are limits on population etc. So the mormons basically want to bail on this system to build their promised land. Fred Johnsons comment was also a veiled threat, that if he got kicked, that an 'accident' might happen, not really an accident if you get me :) "Level headed" . I cruelly told another reactor in episode 3 that her favourite character Shed, had a 'good head on his shoulders' lol Amos Burton is the other character. On a political side note, some people mistakenly view 'The Basic' in the expanse, with the idea that Yang puts forward of a Universal Basic Income, because with the Basic, you aren't allowed to basically be productive or study, whereas with a proper UBI you can work, study and better yourself, and engage with the economy. In the Expanse, on Earth only a privilaged few get access to education and professions. That is why Lopez made a big deal about Naomi having advanced degrees in engineering, that it seems like she was qualified to be doing more than working on some cruddy ice hauler. Enjoyed your review. Looking forward to the next one

The Expanse takes place 200 years in the future. This was stated during the opening credits of the 1st episode. The fellow with Naomi is named Amos.
