Patreon Vlog 1- My dad might have cancer :(
Added 2019-08-17 03:35:56 +0000 UTCHey guys! I wanted to start doing a vlog just to connect more with you guys. I felt like that kind of fell off after Game of Thrones since I didn't have a single place where the majority of my viewers were.
I'll have a Patreon only vlog once a month as a thank you to you guys and I'll do some from time to time on YouTube as well.
Unfortunately the first one is kind of sad. Today I'm talking about plans for my channel, a little mental health, and my dad's currently ongoing cancer scare and possible ramifications for my financial situation and video making.

2019-08-21 18:58:13 +0000 UTCThanks for opening up, while the cost of health care in the US is crazy, the good thing is how much better the treatment for prostate cancer is versus just 20 years ago. A lot of people can understand stress about family, but even with all differences at the end of the day they are still family. There is the old saying about how you might not like your family but you still love them. And you absolutely need you time. Hopefully even just talking to us can help release a little stress. Best luck for your Dad, and please please take car of yourself.

I understand wanting to wait - I refrained from listening to it for a long time because I wanted to see it first, but a friend ended up playing it while we were on a long road trip, and I was kind of stuck. LOL. I ended up becoming obsessed with it, of course! Finally got to see it live when the traveling company came to Minnesota. It was amazing, but part of me wished I had waited to listen to the soundtrack! Haha.

You work very hard to entertain and engage us, and we don't want you to burn out. :) And how cool that you went to the same high school as Lin Manuel Miranda! And all of the stuff you guys have in common...crazy. Can't wait to see him in His Dark Materials!

I know many close friends now in their 60s and 70s who have dealt with prostate cancer and are living full and normal lives many years after the diagnosis. What I find even sadder is your relationship with your father is strained which I know does happen a lot. I am probably in your dad's generation and I grew up in a very progressive environment in Western NY so it still surprises me to hear how conservative and racist people in my generation can be. I also spent a lot of time in the NYC area while I was doing my medical training and do love the NYC vibe! You deserve a break my friend! I just hope your father will realize it some day!

The treatment of Prostate is very well developed these days My father, was diagnosed with an inoperable Prostate cancer in his 70s, and with just a drug treatment(no chemo or radiotherapy), lived a very full life for 10 years following his diagnosis. Eventually a different cancer took him. But In those 10 years, he travelled extensively back and forth to Ireland every year, and went to visit his Brother in the Amazon, including well into his 70's we did the Camino together, to give you an insight into the level of his quality of life. Granted he was in Canada, with a more humane health system than the US. Thanks for sharing that bit of your life anyways, and trust me, you are not alone in that journey, many of us have been or are currently experiencing similar things.

2019-08-17 11:33:08 +0000 UTCI'm not an expert in this area by any means, but as someone in the early part of my later years, if that makes sense, I've started to do some reading about some of the things that happen to older men, and prostate cancer is one of them. The thing you should know is that, while prostate cancer is no joke, it's quite a bit more common than you would think, affecting about 11% of all men at some point in their lives. Also, some prostate cancers are very slow moving, to the point where your father's doctors may actually decide to do nothing at all except monitor the situation. The test your dad probably had come back positive was a test for elevated levels of "PSA," Prostate Specific Antigen, a protein that indicates some sort of prostate difficulty. However, PSA levels are elevated in most men later in life, sometimes for no reason at all. Even when there is a reason, sometimes the reason is benign. Basically, what I'm saying is that right now, there are quite a few more ways this could turn out to be either nothing or nothing serious than there are ways it could be life threatening. Hang in there; it may not be all that bad. And even if it is, there are a lot of treatment options available. As to the clown in the White House... a lot of people are some combination of depressed, angry, embarrassed, outraged, etc. by the guy and his minions. We all just have to band together and vote them all out when the time comes. And hope he doesn't destroy *all* of the furniture before he moves out of that office. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but it looks like more and more people are realizing the damage he's doing. Maybe the writing's on the wall...
