2019-12-03 17:37:18 +0000 UTCOh, and in the original 2003 anime, they explained more about the State Alchemist's exam - it includes a written exam on alchemic theory, a physical examination to make sure the alchemist is healthy and capable of serving the military, an interview with the officers in charge of the program, and a demonstration of their skills. Because all of that had already been covered in the 2003 anime, in Brotherhood they condensed it down to just Ed's practical demonstration. But in the 2003 anime, Al actually did go along with Ed and start the process - he actually did better on the written exam then Ed did, but when it came time for the health exam, Mustang told Al he would have to drop out of contention if they didn't want the fact that they'd committed human transmutation to be exposed, so Al did drop out. And Ed does make a lot of money as a State Alchemist - he draws military pay and gets yearly research grants. He paid Sheska out of his research grants, which - since most of his search for the Stone was done while taking missions for Mustang, he hadn't had to use much of. Anything else - his automail repairs, hotel bills, the room service that Ling charged to him - those would all be coming out of his regular pay, just like anyone else. That's why he was so pissed - plus, Ling is an unwanted guest - he had no right to charge anything to Ed.

Lust, Gluttony, and Envy were still in Liore, where the riots were happening during that confrontation. This time they're in Central - even though Lust is dead, Gluttony, Envy, and Wrath are all around and able to intercede.
