You know I never even thought about that, but that's super interesting. I have been thinking about if Vecna is going to carry over into season 5 as the ultimate big bad. The Mind Flayer resembles a spider, so perhaps it isn't the one leading and is instead a creation of Vecna. I'm thinking Vecna will come out on top at the end of this season, as we've already seen Eleven beat him here in this episode. So part 2 would be our Empire Strikes Back, and then we move into season 5 with all the previous villains coming back for the big finale. We see some particle like enemy in the teaser for part 2 that resembles the Mind Flayer, the russians already have that Demogorgon, which I'm not 100% sure they're going to defeat in part 2. Either way I'm very excited for what's going to come next, especially since the Duffer Brothers have said they broke the story for season 5 during the covid break, so that to me indicates the seasons might be more connected than previous ones, which always felt a bit more standalone to me in terms of villains, story arc, etc.

2022-06-03 16:11:48 +0000 UTCYou are exactly right. I also think they need Brenner for story reasons here as he's being STRONGLY foreshadowed as an Arkhan archetype character in this episode and in 4x06. They aren't exactly being subtle about it. Which would mean that a betrayal would be imminent come July 1st when Part II releases where Brenner would take the Phylactery that Vecna has been shown feeding in the first three episodes of Season 4 (the hand) for himself, thus becoming the big bad for Season 5. I'll admit, it's being foreshadowed in 4x05 and 4x06 so hard that it almost makes me wonder if it's a mislead and someone else will take on the role of Arkhan instead of Brenner at the last second. For example, while it's an outside shot, theoretically Hopper might have both the motive (if he were to somehow think he could bring Sara/Billy/Alexi/Barb/Chrissy/Fred back, after all Vecna is a Lich and not just any Lich but an Arch-Lich) and the emotional vulnerability to be considered a candidate too. It's all speculation of course but it's gotta be someone as it can't really be a Vecna story without a betrayal, right? ;)

2022-06-02 08:07:23 +0000 UTCIt's a complicated issue for sure, regarding Eleven and the Nina Project and all that. I'm with you on the not telling her everything being super shitty, but at the same time, I can maybe understand Owens thought process. Perhaps he thought she wouldn't go back with him if he mentioned Brenner, which I think is fair. I'm not sure what Eleven would do. Her relationship with Brenner is so messed up. Ultimately though, I think it's all necessary. They can't stop Vecna without Eleven and her powers. At least it seems that way to me. I hate it, but I think it's necessary. I wish they would be more open with her though, and treat her like an actual person. I do think at the end of this episode Eleven understands the necessity of Brenner, even though she still hates him. I don't think the show is in any way trying to "redeem" him. I think she knows he’s a means to an end, and once she gets her powers, it’s not like he can physically do anything to her. She was scared of him as a child, back in season one, but she’s not that kid anymore. That might be simplifying things a little. I’m sure it went beyond being scared of him, wrapped up in twisted maternal feelings and all that emotional damage he did, but my point is I think Eleven is in a better place to combat that now, because she knows what real parental love is through Hopper and Joyce. Brenner and co used her as a child, but now she can use them. At least I’m hoping that’s what she is thinking.
