2022-06-11 21:57:13 +0000 UTCthis is a hard one for me, because after years of supporting gun control i've found myself moving the other side as i've moved further left. i don't think the mere presence of a gun is what causes a person to become so miserable and broken that they choose to commit mass murder. and i don't think that the lack of a gun will stop that kind of person (in countries with strict gun control, we have bombings, car attacks, all sorts of other kinds of mass murder instead, as well as still having some mass shootings. that's not better.) the solution is, in my opinion, fairly obvious, the problem is that it isn't profitable: people who are safe, fulfilled, and supported are very unlikely to commit mass murder. radicalisation is a pipeline that begins with anxieties, about poverty, about marginalisation. solving those issues is much more likely to help than taking away arms from the marginalised working class (who are always the first targets of restrictive laws) in a moment when fascists are gaining strength. fascists who may in the current climate attempt a civil war rather than give up their guns, if gun control were actually enacted, making it a frankly impossible policy anyway. there are a number of countries with a lot of guns in civilian hands, granted not as much as in the US but still, a lot. some of them haven't had a school shooting in decades, in others it's less but still very uncommon. most of them have stronger social care than the US. on a personal note, as a trans person in the UK, it is not legal for me to carry a means of self defense. i am no less likely to be attacked for being trans than a trans person in the US, but unlike them, i can't defend myself. i can't train with supportive groups like the socialist rifle association, become comfortable and safe with a self defense weapon that i will almost certainly need at some point in my life. i get to be scared and defenseless every time i go outside. that's gun control. i have no love of guns and would rather live in a world without them. but as long as oppression exists, defense from it is necessary.
